BCHS grapplers place three at state, tie for 12th

Banks County’s Mat Leopards ended a strong season at the state tournament on Saturday, in a tie for 12th place with East Jackson.

Banks had a third place finish from Tramane Mayfield at 285 pounds, a fourth place finish from Matthew Patton at 215 pounds and fifth-place finisher Demetric Dempson at 171 pounds.

Banks scored 47 points, as did East Jackson. East Jackson had two third-place finishers and a sixth-place finisher.

Both teams trailed state champion Jefferson, Lovett, Toombs County, Henry County, Dublin, Sonoraville, Westminster, Swainsboro, Blessed Trinity, Benedictine and Buford.

CHS Finish Fourth At State

Commerce High School’s mat Tigers placed six wrestlers inside the top four at the state tournament and placed fourth as a team.

Commerce finished fourth with 83 points. Bremen won the crown with 176.5 points and five state champions. Wesleyan finished second with 138 points, Gordon Lee was third with 119 and Bowdon placed fifth with 76 points.

The Tigers bounced back after a rough night on Friday to place six inside the top four on Saturday.

Jefferson becomes 13 time Traditional State Champs

You can add another title to the already impressive list compiled over the years by the Jefferson Mat Dragons.

State title number 21. They added that win to their trophy case on Saturday as they took top honors in the AA State Tournament at the Gwinnett Arena.

Jefferson wracked up 225.5 points en route to the title. Second place Lovett scored 133 points. [Full Story »] 

EJCHS Ties For 12th At State

The East Jackson Mat Eagles wrapped up a strong season of wrestling Saturday by tying with Banks County for 12th place in the State Tournament at the Gwinnett Arena.

East Jackson had two third-place finishers in the tournament, Justin Griffith at 119 pounds and Luis Verduzco at 140, as well as a sixth-place finisher, Robbie King in the 160-pound class.

Two wrestlers, Shane Moore and Scott Hill, were one match short of placing. [Full Story »]

Devan Espinosa was the top dog for the Winder-Barrow High School wrestling program this season.

The 125-pound competitor earned a top eight finish at the Class AAAA state meet last week at the Gwinnett Arena. Espinosa’s run at state was catapulted by a first-round pin against Stephen Plante of Starrs Mill, the No. 2 seed.

While the final results were not what the Apalachee High School trio of wrestlers were hoping for, the 2008-09 season was still deemed a success by coach Jim Stoudenmire.

Zak Moore, Austin Sheppard and Chris Hamrick each advanced to the Class AAAA state finals this past week at the Gwinnett Arena to cap what was standout seasons for each.

JCCHS sends seven grapplers to state

Seven Mat Panthers qualified to go to State competition this weekend during the sectional tournament held at Eagles Landing High School. Eleven Jackson County grapplers had the opportunity to make the cut, with the top eight placers in each weight class going to state.

Ryan Howe had the best performance for Jackson County, placing first in the 189 lb. category. Howe faced Tommy Williams on Eastside for the second week in a row to win the sectional title.

“It is a good possibility that Howe could meet Williams in the State Finals this upcoming weekend for the fourth time this season,” said coach Jason Powers. [Full Story »]

Jefferson looking for another historic title win

The Mat Dragons of Jefferson took one step closer to the record books this weekend, as they qualified 13 of 14 wrestlers for state competition this weekend at the Gwinnett Arena.

Five Dragons brought home sectionals titles from the weekend, including Cason Thurmond, who took the title in the 103 lb. class; Cutler Finch took first in the 125 lb. class; Cam Thurmond took top honors in the 135 lb. class; Jay Fowler won the title in the 152 lb. class; and Zac Crosby took first in the 171 lb. class. The Commerce grapplers made a good showing at the Traditional Area Tournament, missing the area championship by just a half a point.

Commerce finished with 238 points just behind Wesleyan with 238.5 points.

After a successful showing at the sectionals tournament in Jefferson, seven Mat Eagles will be representing East Jackson at the State tournament at the Gwinnett Arena this weekend.

The highest place finisher of the Mat Eagles was Robbie King, who placed third in the 160 lb. category. Other placers included Scott Hill, who placed fourth in the 189 lb. category; Justin Griffith, who placed fourth in the 119 lb. category; Shane Moore, who placed fourth in the 130 lb. category; Drew Hunter, who placed fifth in the 152 lb. category; Victor Equirte, who placed fifth in the 103 lb. category; and Luis Verduzco, who placed sixth in the 140 lb. category.
