For the past two weeks, the Banks County Mat Leopards have had it easy with only practice to worry about, but the grapplers jumped back into action last Saturday at the Georgia/Carolina Classic at Hart County.

The Big Blue wrestlers was one of approximately 16 teams competing in the tournament. Kasey Hanley, BCHS wrestling coach, said that historically, the Mat Leopards have competed very well at Hart County, and this year was no exception.

The Jan. 3 match began 2009 for the team, and with Banks taking the win; the season is looking in good shape as the wrestlers prepare for Area Duals this weekend.

Region rival East Jackson hosts this weekend’s Area Duals, where Banks will compete against the Mat Eagles and wrestling powerhouse Jefferson. The duals begin on Friday at East Jackson.

Banks County hosted its first home match of the new year on Tuesday against Towns County, Franklin County and West Hall. Results were unavailable at press time

Commerce High School’s wrestling Tigers are in good shape and are pumped for this weekend’s Area Duals.

Coming off of a first-place victory at the Amicalola Classic, Jan. 2-3, Commerce traveled to Dawson County on Tuesday for a tri-meet against Riverside and Dawson.

Ron Wilson, Larry Jordan, Eric Akins and Mike Wilson comprised the winning team in the Jackson County EMS Employee Benevolence Group’s recent golf tournament.

The event raised more than $5,000.

Jackson County Comprehensive High School seniors Kaitlin Hill and Elizabeth Hunt have been selected as top 40 finalists for the Georgia Cheerleader of the Year/All-State Squad.

They will perform an individual routine and interview at Columbus State University on August 9 to compete for the title of Georgia Cheerleader of the Year and to be a member of the All-State Squad. Only 16 cheerleaders from the state are selected for the state squad.

Cheerleading coach Derelle McMenomy said she wishes both girls luck and is proud of their grades, community service, and cheering, all of which are part of the selection criteria for the All-State squad.

Jackson County Parks and Rec faced off against Jefferson Parks and Rec this past week in the Dizzy Dean baseball tournament.

The Dizzy Dean District 6 tournament attracts a lot of attention from area park and rec departments. With many different age groups competing in the tournament, both local rec departments have had a number of teams play well.
