Commerce’s Tigers are not ready to end the basketball season just yet.

A third-place finish in the region tournament last week secured the Tigers a spot in the playoffs.

“I am very proud of this team,” coach Chad Bridges said. “We have received contributions from 10 different players this year. All 10 of those have started games for us at one time or another. This has been truly a team effort. The guys have been more concerned with team success than individual success.”

The tournament finish pushed the Tigers into the first round of the state playoffs against Paideia. Commerce will head to Atlanta on Saturday to begin the Tigers’ state tournament campaign. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. and admission is $7 at the gate.

Last Friday night didn’t quite go as planned for the Leopards.

Banks County traveled to Calhoun for the first round of the state playoffs, a trip that is one of the reasons the Big Blue can still hold its head high.

Banks County was knocked out of the running, blanked 63-0 by Calhoun. While the final score may not be something the players want to add in when they tell the story, what will be told is how the Banks County Leopards made it to the playoffs after 11 years, how this season was the first winning season in over a decade and how Justin Beasley’s 2,000 plus yards blew past the rushing record of Terry Allen. The Commerce High School Tigers are in the playoffs and still have a challenge before them.

Commerce secured a number three seed in the playoffs after a 22-12 victory over Prince Avenue last Friday.

The first hurdle in the playoffs for the Tigers is Wilkinson County, the number two seed in 7-A. Commerce will make the two-and-half-hour trek to Irwinton this Friday for the first-round game. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. [Full Story »] 

The Banks County Leopards' sights are set on the playoffs.

Banks County defeated Union County 34-13, Friday night.

That win coupled with the North Oconee defeat of Fannin County will allow the Leopards to slide into the post season.

Expectations were high as the Banks County cross country team traveled to Riverside last Saturday.

In the region race, the cross country runners had to give it their all because according to coach Kelly McDuffie, it is all or nothing in cross country.

The Leopards’ runners were rewarded for this season’s hard work. The girls finished seventh in the 8-AA region, which is one of the toughest regions in the state, and Amy Sims finished just shy of a new school record.

The boys made it to state, finishing third in the region. The brother duo of Jorge Diaz, placing second, and Ivan Diaz, placing eighth, broke into the top ten and set a school record.

The boys will go this Saturday to compete in the state race at Carrollton. The race starts at 11:30 a.m.

The Jefferson Dragons’ dream of a Class A state title was crushed after facing Pacelli.

The quarterfinal series was in Columbus on Tuesday. The Dragons, coming out of a three game series against Eagles Landing Christian last week, knew that the road to the finals was tough. [Full Story »]
