The Winder-Barrow High School baseball team has been in this position before.

Coach Brian Smith’s team has once again qualified for the state playoffs and will take what it hopes will be the first step toward a state championship Friday. The Bulldoggs will host Forsyth Central in a best-of-three series beginning with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday. The third game, if necessary, would also be at Charles W. Maddox Complex on Saturday.

Forsyth Central is the No. 3 seed from Region 7-AAAA. [Full Story »] 

BASEBALL: Diamond Doggs fall to Pope

When all was said and done last week at Pope High School, the Winder-Barrow High School Diamond Doggs, while disappointed they would not be advancing, knew they had accomplished quite a bit during the 2011 campaign.

WBHS fell to Pope 4-3 in nine innings in the opener before seeing its season end with a 10-0 setback in the second game. The first game, which saw the Bulldoggs miss opportunities to win, ended up getting away from WBHS. [Full Story »] 

Banks falls after three game series to Westminster

Inside the final 16 was as far as the Banks County Diamond Leopards could push this year in their postseason drive.

Banks County’s postseason ended Thursday after a three game battle with Westminster.

Westminster went on to defeat Bleckley in the quarterfinals and take a spot in the final four.

The Winder-Barrow High School baseball team showed it pays to compete in a tough region.

The Diamond Doggs entered the postseason as the No. 4 seed from Region 8-AAAA but eliminated Dalton, the No. 1 seed from Region 7-AAAA, Saturday in a best-of-three series which went all three games. [Full Story »] 

Swine Flu Could Prove Helpful For Tigers

Commerce’s baseball Tigers might have an unusual edge in first round of the playoffs.

The doubleheader playoff games set for Friday against Eagles Landing Christian might prove to be easier than expected. Reports on Tuesday suggested that Eagles Landing might have to forfeit the playoff games after a confirmed case of the H1N1 virus (swine flu) led officials to shut the school down.

While Eagles Landing officials and GHSA work to determine if the games can be played, Commerce is still preparing to host the doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. with the second to follow at 7:00 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be played Saturday.

Leopards earn number three seed, set for playoffs

It will be a three-hour bus ride for the Diamond Leopards Thursday as the team heads to Summerville to face Chattooga in the state tournament.

Spirits are high as Banks County makes the return to the state playoffs.

“It will be a bit of a ride for us, but we'll be up to the challenge,” said Leopards’ coach Joe Lord. “We are excited to be back in the state tournament for the second year in a row.”

BCHS hosts region final four

“We were up to the challenge and eager to punch our ticket to the state playoffs,” said coach Joe Lord about the Banks County Diamond Leopards. “We are excited to play in the final four of the region tournament and even more excited that we are hosting the tournament at our park.”

The Leopards will advance to the final four in the region tournament. Banks County hosts the tournament Thursday starting at 11 a.m. when the Leopards face the Dragons from Jefferson.

“It will be a big challenge, but we are excited about the opportunities that are in front of us,” Lord said. “We've now qualified for the state playoffs in back-to-back years, and that is a great accomplishment for our program.”

Lady netters’ playoff return ends

The Lady Leopard netters made a huge accomplishment this season, returning to the state playoffs after over a five-year absence.

The ladies ended their season against Pepperell in Lindale last Wednesday in the first round of the playoffs. Pepperell defeated the Lady Leopards 3-2, but coach Lisa Thomas was still pleased with the performance of her team.

“Each girl played her best and being able to go to the first round of the state playoffs was a huge accomplishment for each of the girls,” Thomas said. “I know this is just the beginning of our success as a team and we are already looking forward to next year's season.”

The Apalachee High School boys soccer team did just that last week by knocking off Paulding County 1-0 in a defensive struggle in the opening round of the Class AAAA state playoffs. [Full Story »]
