There might not be a more dominant team in any sport than Spain in international soccer.

The Spaniards have won the last three major international championships — European 2008 Championship, 2010 World Cup, and the European 2012 Championship — and don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

In fact, they might be better now than they were in 2008 or even in 2010 when they won the World Cup. They play one style of soccer, that’s domination. [Full Story »] 

SOCCER: Lady Doggs defeat Rockdale

A three-goal second half helped push the Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldogg soccer team to a 4-1 victory against Rockdale County Tuesday night.

Clara Tapplin and Ashley Hagenbaugh helped lead WBHS to the victory.

The match was tied at one goal each at halftime but Tapplin scored twice in the second half and finished with three overall.

Hagenbaugh also added a goal for coach Ben Arms.

Tapplin scored her team’s first goal at the 9:06 mark of the first half, erasing what had been a one-goal deficit. Rockdale County had scored the first goal of the match at the 18:11 mark of the first half.

Tapplin struck quickly in the second half, finding the net at the 39:13 mark. After the Lady Doggs just missed another scoring opportunity at the 32:05 mark, Hagenbaugh scored with 28:44 left before Tapplin sealed the deal with 28:25 remaining.

Arms was pleased by the victory but told his team after the game to continue looking ahead and focus on the task of returning to the postseason.

The recent success enjoyed by the Apalachee High School boys soccer team continued last week as the Wildcats downed Loganville 3-2 at R. Harold Harrison Stadium.

That win improved coach Chad Hooper’s team to 2-2 in region play and 5-4 overall. [Full Story »]

The Apalachee High School Lady Wildcat soccer team is coming off a strong week but coach Scott Bates knows a tough task awaits.

Good start for MCHS soccer

It has been a good start for the Madison County soccer teams as both the girls and boys have added wins after the opening games.

The team faces region opponent Clarke Central on Friday on the road. Clarke Central is 2-0 coming into the Feb. 25 match. Next week, Madison County gets the home field advantage as the Lady Red Raiders host Habersham Central, March 1. Game times start at 5:30 p.m. with the boys games following. Update: Tuesday's home match against Habersham has been postponed. The rescheduled date has yet to be announced.

The Lady Red Raiders sit at 2-1 after adding a 3-0 match over East Jackson Tuesday night. With nine returning starters and 10 seniors on the team, the Lady Red Raiders have a solid core for the 2011 season.

“It is great to have so many returning. We have a unique situation where most of the team has played together for three solid years,” said head coach Molly McCarty. “You can definitely notice this when we are playing.”

Jefferson to face Oglethorpe Friday

The Jefferson soccer teams were looking for good results this week after wet weather cut last week’s action short.

Both teams were slated to face East Jackson on Friday, but those matches were postponed due to wet weather.

The Jackson County soccer teams started off their week on a wet note.

On Thursday, both boys and girls matches at Oglethorpe County were cancelled. The matches will not be rescheduled.

Jefferson downed by Jackson County

It wasn’t the start to the season that the Jefferson soccer teams were hoping for, as both the boys and the girls teams fell to Jackson County last week.

The boys lost 5-1 to the Panthers, while the girls came up on the short end of a 1-0 final.

Girls’ coach Shannon Dupree said their match with the Lady Panthers was a good one, but Jefferson ran into trouble when their goalkeeper had to leave the game due to a technical red card. Dupree said the player will be out for the next game as well. [Full Story »]
