Nicholson hosts inaugural Year End Chase

Last Saturday, Dec. 27, over 140 runners gathered in Nicholson to run in the inaugural Year End Chase 5K and one mile Fun Run. The East Jackson Runners’ Club hosted the charity race at the Nicholson City Park.

All proceeds from the race go to support health and fitness in Jackson County.

Serving as one of the kickoff races for the 2009 Run and See Georgia Grand Prix Series, Saturday’s race welcomed runners from around the area, including a number of local high school student runners, former students runners and out of state participants. [ Full Story » ] 

Cross country among elite teams in region

Banks County’s cross-country team has a lot of reasons to be proud.

Not only did the boys make it to the state race in Carrollton, but also four Banks runners were named to the All Region team.
After running in the region race at Riverside, where the boys placed third in the region. The Diaz bothers Jorge and Ivan broke a school record. Then the boy’s team began preparing for the state race.

Coach Kelly McDuffie said that the preparation was more of a mental thing and consisted of switching the boys to practice in the morning instead of the afternoon. [ Full Story » ] 

Eagles Take 3rd, 4th At Oglethorpe

The East Jackson Eagles cross country teams continued their early season progress, with the boys taking third out of nine teams at Saturday’s meet at Oglethorpe County, while the girls placed fourth.

The Eagles were scheduled to take part in the Banks County Open Meet in Homer on Tuesday. Check the East Jackson Eagles Scoreboard for Oct. 2 for updates.

Next up for East Jackson is a trip to Unicoi State Park in Helen for the White County Invitational on Oct. 7.

BCHS teams take first at recent Habersham meet

The Banks County High School cross country teams made a statement recently about how far their respective programs have advanced in recent seasons with first-place showings at Habersham Central High School.

The BCHS Leopards were first with 32 points followed by Johnson High School, Habersham Central, Hart County and Trinity.
Viet Phang turned in a personal best time of 21:08 as did Jared Clark in 25:00.

Jorge Diaz was the top runner for the BCHS boys in 18:29 followed by Ivan Diaz (18:53), Keiffer Hellmeister (20:07), Avery Chastain (20:08), Nathan Holloway (20:33), Simon Hurtado (20:38) and Trey Martin (20:51).

XTERRA 5K race set for October 4

Most people are familiar with the benefits running has to offer: weight loss, stress reduction and improved cardiovascular health. Despite all the positives involved with running, it is often difficult for beginners to stick with a running regimen.
