Jackson County just misses title shot at World Series

Play got underway Friday at the Dizzy Dean 11-year-old World Series, being held at East Jackson Park in Nicholson.

Thirty-five teams took to the field in a round robin format, with eight teams winning pool play to advance to a double elimination tournament to play for the championship.

The Jackson County Force was the only local team to make the championship tournament. Other pool winners were the North Port Nationals from Alabama, North West from St. Petersburg, Florida, the Tallahassee Capitals from Florida, Jeffersontown, Kentucky, Fossil Park from Florida, Fulton, Mississippi and the Blast from Panama City Beach, Florida. After finishing as the runner-up in last weekend's state tournament the Commerce 14-and-under girls' softball team has its eyes set on Mississippi. The Dizzy Dean National Tournament will begin July 22 in Southaven, MS, with the championship game scheduled July 25.

The all-star girls advanced to the national level after last week's state tournament where the team came back through the losers' bracket to challenge the almost undefeated Fannin County team. Starting the tourney on Friday by bumping Dawson County into the losers bracket, the Commerce ladies joined them after losing their next game to host Fannin County.

In the losers' bracket Commerce defeated Dawson again to advance to play Jackson County in a nine-inning game where Commerce would come out on top 5-4. On Sunday, the girls defeated Fannin in the first game of the championship round, 11-7, but Fannin County rebounded and won the title in a 14-11 slugfest.

Members of the team are Drea Mathis, Alexis Knox, Jessika Kyle, Brooke Vickery, Kayla Burks, Kayla Knox, Heather Tyson, Hannah Crumley, Shana Sheridian and Emily Gonzalez. Coaches are Mike Vickery, Charles Kyle and Scott Andrews.

33 Sea Dragons headed for state meet

Out of 37 Jefferson Sea Dragons that took part in the last weekend’s GPRA District Meet at the Frances Meadows Aquatic Center in Gainesville, 33 will be traveling to state competition later this month.

Fourteen of those swimmers made state in one or two individual events, while the others are part of medley or freestyle relay teams that qualified. Eight swimmers qualified in two individual events and two relays.

By comparison, last year the team took 17 swimmers to state. [Full Story »]

After months of preparation, the big moment for the Jackson County Parks and Rec department is upon us.

Opening ceremonies for the Dizzy Dean 11-Year-Old Baseball World Series are slated to get underway at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Eagle Stadium at East Jackson Comprehensive High School.

As of Monday morning, 34 teams were slated to take part from six states. Three area teams, the Jackson County Force, the Jackson County Bullets and the Jefferson Dragons will be taking part. [Full Story »]

All-Stars nab third state championship

It was a Banks County-dominated series in Jefferson last week as the 9-10 All-Stars cruised through for the Class C state championship.

This year’s victory marks the third year running that the Banks team has won the Georgia Recreation and Park Association Mite girls’ softball championship.

BCPRD’s athletics coordinator Tommy Wilson said he thought the girls played excellently during the tournament and thanked the coaches of the all-star teams for their support.

World Series To Open July 16

In just under 10 days the opening ceremonies will kick off the 11-year-old Dizzy Dean World Series, hosted by the Jackson County Park and Recreation Department.

The July 16 opening ceremonies will be held at East Jackson Comprehensive High School at 6:30 p.m. and will close with a fireworks display.
While the ceremony will wrap up around 9:00 p.m. at the football stadium, tournament play begins Friday, July 17 at 10:00 a.m. with a format established by Dizzy Dean Baseball and brackets determined through a blind draw on Thursday.

All-star teams battle for state championships

Banks County’s Park and Rec 9-10 year old all-star teams have had a strong season this summer. Both teams made it through to the final tournaments for a chance to win state titles.

Coming up this Friday night in Jefferson, the 9-10 girls team will take on the District seven champs in the first round of the GRPA state tournament. First pitch is at 6 p.m. on the fields behind Jefferson High School.

Win or lose, the girls will play again at 8 p.m. Friday. The championship title will be determined in the final game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The girls, won the District six title after climbing the bracket, defeating Union County in a 12-0 sweep, Towns County 15-4 and for the crown 11-2.

Sea Dragons net several firsts at Dacula

The Jefferson Sea Dragons took part in an Invitational Developmental meet at Dacula last week, coming home with several first place results.

Gregory Prozorovskiy placed first in the boys’ 6-under 25 Freestyle and first in the boys’ 6-under 25 Backstroke.

Jackson Lamb took first in the boys’ 8-under 25 Freestyle, first in the boys’ 8-under 25 Backstroke and first in the boys’ 8-under 25 Butterfly. [Full Story »]

Banks County will be sending a team to Canton to compete in the state tournament.

Banks’ recreation 9-10 year old team will begin their bid for state championship Saturday, July 4, in Canton. The first competition for the boys will be against Sandy Springs with the winner advancing to play on Sunday at noon.

With about two weeks left, everything is now in full swing to prepare for the upcoming 11-year-old Dizzy Dean World Series, which will be hosted by Jackson County Parks and Recreation July 17-21.

Officials estimate between 30-40 teams from around the southeast will be taking part in the event. Already confirmed are teams from Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi and Virginia.
