A victory Friday night in Dalton over Callaway means the Jefferson Dragons will be heading to the basketball Final Four playoffs for the first time since 1983.

The Dragons rallied in the fourth quarter to cut the lead held by Callaway, then move ahead to win 65-58.

Jefferson will move on to play in Macon on Thursday against the winner of the Thomasville and Henry County pairing. [Full Story »]

A putback by with just four seconds left on the clock off a missed shot gave the Dragons a one point edge, and that was all Jefferson needed to advance to the next round of state playoff action, as they won 68-67 Friday night.

The Dragons will next play host to Westminster in second round action Tuesday night.

The Jefferson Mat Dragons etched another page into their record book Saturday as they scored their tenth consecutive traditional state title, tying a state record with seven individual champions in the process.

Winter weather sets state tourney this week

The inclement weather seen all over the northern part of the state last week has thrown scheduling for the final two events in high school wrestling forward and, in turn, backwards as well.

With the state sectionals having to be cancelled, that means that the State Championships, scheduled for this weekend at the Gwinnett Arena, will now revert back to its previous four-day format. [Full Story »]

According to the Georgia High School Association website, all Sectional (Class AA-AAAAA) Wrestling Tournaments have been CANCELLED.

Class A area tournaments will have their schedules altered for next week, with details to be posted on the GHSA website.

AA-AAAAA wrestlers will be moved to the Gwinnett Arena starting on Wednesday, February 17, 2010. [Full Story »]

Lanier National Speedway will play host this weekend to the 2010 Speedfest Late Model event, being held Saturday and Sunday January 30 and 31.

Speedfest is the year’s first big short-track stock car event attracting drivers from all over the country. This event has attracted some of NASCAR’s biggest stars over the years. The event, which was originally held at Lakeland Speedway in Florida, moved to Lanier in 2009. [Full Story »]

It was a showdown that many had been waiting for, as defending AA state dual champion Jefferson faced off against the number two team in the state, Sonoraville, to decide the state dual title Saturday in Macon.

In the end, it was the Mat Dragons coming away with its ninth consecutive state dual championship by defeating Sonoraville 41-22.

Coach Doug Thurmond said he knew Sonoraville had a real good team going in. “We had scouted them and we knew they were going to be real tough,” he added. [Full Story »]

After coming away with victories last week in matches against North Hall and East Jackson, the Mat Panthers of Jackson County now get ready to host the 16th annual Panther Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

The event will see several area teams coming to JCCHS to compete, including Jefferson, East Jackson, Commerce, Banks County, Madison County, Apalachee, Hart County, Riverside Military Academy and White County. [Full Story »]

Gresham Motorsports Park added some sizzle to its 2010 schedule last week with the announcement that the totally renovated facility would play host to a NASCAR Camping World Series East event next season.

Months of anticipation will come to a head this weekend when Gresham Motorsports Park reopens with the 26th annual World Crown 300.

The historic late model stock car race will close out a three-day weekend speedfest that begins Friday at the totally refurbished racing facility.
