Southern Nationals Coming Up

For three days in May, Commerce will experience the thunder of nitromethane-powered Top Fuel race cars as the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals comes to Atlanta Dragway May 13-15.

In addition to Top Fuel Dragster and Top Fuel Funny Car, nine other classes will be contested.

Although the Southern Nationals includes participants from all over the world, dozens of local racers who can claim Atlanta Dragway as their home track have already pre-entered the event, including Melanie Troxel who is based in Duluth. [Full Story »]

Chase Elliott grabs victory at Gresham

Chase Elliott scored one of the biggest wins of his young career capturing the Monolith Companies 100 Pro Late Model race Saturday at Gresham Motorsports Park.

The 14-year-old Dawsonville native saw his strongest challengers self-destruct in the 100-lap event. In the end, Elliott still had the best car and roared away to a half-lap lead over Johnny Henderson, Nick Potts, Gene Kirila and Kevin Stephens. [Full Story »] 

JHS boys netters defeat Athens Academy

For the first time in many years — perhaps ever — the Jefferson High School boys’ tennis team defeated rival Athens Academy Tuesday afternoon.

The boys won 3-2 with the Number Two doubles clinching the winning match.

Also winning were Number One singles Zack Bost and Number Two singles Blair Buffington. [Full Story »]

The USARacing Pro Cup division and Gresham Motorsports Park have a lot in common.

Both groups are the new face of old favorites. In the case of USAR Pro Cup, they used to be the Hooters Pro Cup Series. For GMP, it is a shining, all-new racing facility where Jefco, Georgia International and Peach State Speedways stood for 40 years. [Full Story »]

Jefferson loses to Thomasville in state semi-finals

For only the third time in school history, the Jefferson Dragons last week traveled to Macon for the final four in state basketball playoffs. They were hoping to be able to make it one more game, to the championship game on Saturday.

But it didn’t pan out that way, as the Dragons came up short against the Thomasville Bulldogs, losing 69-43. [Full Story »] 

Grill opens season at Gresham with victory

Augie Grill dominated the Champion Racing Association (CRA) Super Late Model season opening event at Gresham Motorsports Park Saturday.

The Hayden, Ala., driver served notice early that he would be the driver to beat posting fast time in qualifying with a 16.169 second tour of the GMP half-mile oval.

Grill started third on the 26-car starting field after the post-qualifying inversion and wasted little time moving to the front taking the lead from Ryan Lawler on Lap 16. [Full Story »] 

Gresham season opener set for Saturday

If the pre-entry list is any indication, Saturday’s Champion Racing Association (CRA) Super Series Super Late Model event is going to produce plenty of thrills for fans attending the season-opening race at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson this Saturday.

A total of 27 Super Late Model teams and drivers have already entered the 125-lap event with several others expected to be on hand with the 2010 season takes the green flag this Saturday.

A longtime staple of the Gresham facility when it was known as Jefco, Georgia International and Peach State Speedways, Saturday’s race will mark the first time the Super Late Models have competed at GMP since 2008. [Full Story »]

Jefferson defeats Westminster, Callaway

For the first time in 27 years, the Jefferson Dragons boys’ basketball team is heading for the final four in Macon.

They got there by winning very close games against Westminster and Callaway that easily could have gone against them. But the Dragons fought back both times to put themselves in a position to contend for the state title. [Full Story »]
