Three area racers make Georgia HOF semi-finalist list

Three veteran racecar drivers with local ties have been named among the 15 semi-finalists for the 2009 class for the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.

Buck Simmons, Tommie Irvin and Katron Sosebee are among the semi-finalists. The final group of eight that will make up the 2009 class will be voted on during a June 13 meeting at the Hall of Fame in Dawsonville. [Full Story »]

Back on August 9, I was fortunate enough to be present at a timeless event.

That’s when the inaugural Lakewood Speedway Family Reunion was held at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, located at the Dawsonville City Municipal Complex.

An estimated 400 or so former racers, fans and family members came out to tell stories, shake hands and remember one of the grandest speedways in history, which was located just south of Atlanta.

Column: Legendary Southern 500 Rises Again

Traditional race fans got a pleasant surprise last Thursday morning when the announcement was made that the Southern 500 would be returning to the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule, in name at least, at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina in 2009.

The Southern 500 was one of the races that helped build NASCAR into what it is today. But a desire to cash in on a supposed goldmine of fans in California (that has since failed to materialize) saw Darlington’s traditional date go to the California Speedway in 2003. The Southern 500 event itself, after a one-year run in November, was done away with in 2005.

Tony Stewart recently made the announcement that his racecar next year, as part of his buy-in to the current Haas-CNC team, will be number 14.

The reason Tony went with this number was his connection to one of his racing heroes, legendary racer A.J. Foyt.

After reading several of the reports and opinions about Saturday’s Nationwide series race in Montreal, which was run as a steady rain fell, one supposed “fact” was stated several times.

The offending item was the notion that Saturday’s event was the first ever NASCAR race run in the rain.

There’s no way to sugar coat it. Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was painful to watch.

That was because tire issues on Sunday caused drivers to tip toe around the storied 2.5 mile track, and caused NASCAR to throw several competition caution flags to allow teams to change the quickly worn out tires for new.

It’s been an interesting week, as many of the NASCAR pundits are already calling Kyle Busch the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion.

True, that after picking up win number seven at Chicagoland Speedway, young Mr. Busch is very much a favorable candidate for the title once the tour reaches Homestead in November.

Hurricane Shoals’ mini-golf course under construction

A certain image comes to mind whenever you hear the term mini-golf. Perhaps images of the typical putt-putt courses festooned with campy windmills and faux mountains.

Jackson County Parks and Rec department is looking to swap that image for one with a more historic theme.

The 18-hole “Spirit of the River” mini-golf course that is being installed at Hurricane Shoals Park is the brainchild of Pat Bell. Jackson County Parks and Recreation director, Ricky Sanders said that the concept was originated by Bell to tell the story of the area. The overall design of each hole serves as a timeline for the area, with each hole telling a story about the area and Jackson County. [Full Story »]

I was already working on a few items for the next paper last Wednesday afternoon when my phone rang. Upon answering, a familiar voice on the other end said, “Hey, this is Buddy Baker.”

Buddy was calling to talk about being the grand marshal at this year’s Mountain Moonshine Festival, the annual gathering of race and old car enthusiasts centered around the square in downtown Dawsonville, in October. [Full Story »] 

Column: IMHOF Needs To Honor Raymond Parks

Back in April, 1949 NASCAR Cup champion Red Byron was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame at Talladega, Alabama.

As part of the induction, Raymond Parks, owner of Byron’s championship winning racecar, stood side-by-side with 2007 Cup champ Jimmie Johnson, both with their championship trophies.

They were joined shortly thereafter by all the past championship winning car owners and drivers who are members of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. [Full Story »]
