Brandon Thomas has been hired as the new varsity girls basketball coach at Winder-Barrow High School.

Thomas arrives from Pickens County High School where he has worked as an assistant for the past six seasons. He has also coached at Eagles Landing High School.

Thomas replaces Brenda Hill-Gilmore, who resigned to become the head coach at Gainesville High School. [Full Story »] 

MCHS upset in quarterfinals

They say all good things must come to an end and that sad truth befell Madison County’s Lady Red Raiders at the region tournament Madison County faced Flowery Branch in the region quarterfinals.

The Lady Falcons entered the game 8-18 overall, but in a 10 point upset, knocked the defending region champions out of the tournament.

The loss of the region tournament means that for the first time in half a decade, Madison County’s girls will not be making an appearance in the AAAA state tourney.

Madison County coach Dan Lampe said that the Lady Red Raiders had a good season and it was disappointing to have it end like it did.

Flowery Branch defeated the girls, 51-41, advancing to defeat Loganville, 44-41 and taking runner-up in the region after falling to Clarke Central, 73-37.

Kayla Freeman led the Lady Red Raiders with 12 points, followed by Areil Sorrells with 10. Madison County ends the season 21-5 overall. [Full Story »]

Lady Cats one win from state tournament

There have been several accomplishments by the Apalachee High School Lady Wildcats this season.

The team has set a record for number of wins in a season. The team finished as a No. 3 seed for the region tournament, its highest ever in program history. Top 10 programs have been defeated by the Lady Wildcats in 2010-2011.

BC girls prep for region tourney

Banks County’s Lady Leopards are less than a week away from the first game of the region tournament. At press time, the current standings have Banks County, 2-7; 10-14, facing either Jefferson, 5-4; 13-9, or Hart County, 6-4; 12-11, next week, Feb. 14.

Before entering into the region tournament the girls are looking to end the regular season on a high note with a road victory over Dawson County, 0-6; 6-9, this week.

Banks County heads to Dawsonville looking for a repeat of the January home game where the Lady Leopards pulled an eight point victory over the Lady Tigers. Friday’s regular season closer tips off at 7 p.m. [Full Story »]

With 29 seconds remaining and his team trailing by a point, Apalachee High School girls basketball coach Michael Parks calmly called timeout and began talking to his team.

Lady Wildcats defeat WBHS in rematch

The Apalachee High School girls basketball team used a 28-point, 13-rebound performance from Saboyce Shelton to defeat Winder-Barrow Saturday night.

The win avenged a two-point loss by the Lady Wildcats to the Lady Bulldoggs earlier this season. Kiarra Sanford added 14 points and Lacresha Mayweather scored 12 for AHS.

Brittany Witt scored eight for WBHS while Jasmine Mask had eight points and eight rebounds.

Tuesday’s game against visiting East Jackson was something of a cakewalk for the Apalachee High School Lady Wildcats.

Despite posting a 47-28 win in a game in which it never trailed, AHS will have to be prepared for tougher battles down the road, according to its coach. [Full Story »] 

Lady Wildcats' historic season ends

The Apalachee High School Lady Wildcats were playing without one of their top weapons Monday night in the opening round of the Region 8-AAAA tournament and it proved costly.

Competing without senior Porshia Cleveland, AHS fell to Rockdale County 78-62. The loss ended the Lady Wildcats season but not before Michael Parks’ team recorded a program record 10 victories. [Full Story »]
