Bulldoggs see second-half lead slip away

The Winder-Barrow High School football team seemed well on its way to a possible victory Friday night, but old lady luck seemed to leave the Bulldogg sideline in the fourth quarter.

As a result, WBHS (0-1) fell to host Jackson County 21-10 in the season opener for both teams at Panther Stadium in Jefferson. The loss increases the Bulldoggs’ losing streak to 25 games, dating back to the 2009 season.

WBHS rallied from a 7-0 halftime deficit to lead by three points after the third quarter on a 40-yard field goal by Colin Shannon and a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Christian Hodge. [Full Story »]

Maybe Usain Bolt winning the gold medal in the 100m dash would be a good spectacle to see?

BCA Knights inch their way to varsity football

The calendar indicates time until the first full season of varsity play for the Bethlehem Christian Academy football team is getting short.

The Knights are set to play their first full season of varsity football beginning in August. BCA competes in the Georgia Independent Schools Association and is a member of Region 1-A.Coach Don Garmon said Sunday the upcoming season will be another step in building a competitive varsity football program.

“We are looking forward to it,” Garmon said. “We have some new kids coming in and we are eager to see what they can do.”

Defensive coordinator Nick Pou is helping oversee summer workouts for the players. Official practice will begin July 30. Garmon said the team will begin in shorts and helmets before working gradually to full contact. [Full Story »] 

Leopards to face Adairsville Tigers for first round of playoffs

The Banks County Leopards will face another tough opponent in the first round of the AA playoffs. The Adairsville Tigers are 9-1 on the season and are hungry for a win in the playoffs. It has been seven seasons since their last appearance in the state playoffs.

The Tigers have 23 seniors on their team and some pretty good talent. Senior Tail back Mike Upshaw has rushed for over 1500 yards this season. The only loss on the season for the Tigers came from the game against Pepperell (7-3 Overall , 5-0 Region), a 7A-AA team who will play Elbert in the first round of the playoffs.

The Leopards will have to be multi dimensional to beat the Tigers. The will bring a good running game and some of the passing game the Leopards saw last week with North Oconee. The Tigers hold on to the ball exceptionally well and the Leopards are going to have to force turnovers to win the game.

Special teams will need to step up to put a stop to the 15-20 yard average return on kickoffs by the Tigers. Adairsville has also held its opponents to an average of less than 11 points per game with the exception of Armuchee scoring 20 points.

Loganville defeats AHS in final seconds

Friday’s game between Apalachee High School and Loganville High School was a fan’s dream — and a defensive coach’s nightmare.

The Wildcats and Red Devils compiled 87 points and both offenses were unstoppable in the second half. AHS did not punt the entire game, scoring on each possession. Yet, the Wildcats still fell by three points as LHS scored the game-winner on an 8-yard run by quarterback Garrett Ford with three seconds left.

“I’ve never been involved in a game where we scored every time we had the football but still lost,” Wildcat head coach Shane Davis said.

The AHS defense held Loganville to seven points in the first half but the Red Devils turned things up several gears in the second half. [Full Story »] 

Bulldoggs blanked by Cedar Shoals

Even in their final game of 2011, the Winder-Barrow High School Bulldoggs continued to battle.

While Cedar Shoals would emerge with a 33-0 victory, WBHS coach David Wagner liked the effort his team gave in the last contest of the season.

“I thought we played well, especially in the first half,” Wagner said. “Our kids came out and really competed against a physically bigger opponent. We moved the football some in spots and gave a tremendous effort. In the end, their size and speed got to us in the second half.” [Full Story »] 

BRIDGES: Rival games are always fun to experience

Barrow County is unique — and lucky I suppose — in that it has a special rivalry between it’s two major high schools.

I’m sure rivalaries exist in counties such as Gwinnett but with so many schools and so many people, I’ve alway felt rivalries get lost in the shuffle. It’s not that way in Barrow County. Here we have Winder-Barrow High School, the program with a history dating back decades, and we have Apalachee, still the relatively new kid on the block.

While the football teams have only been playing since 2004, the gridiron rivalry has quickly become one the community enjoys and looks forward to. With some changes on the horizon in terms of classifications and region alignments, it would be a shame if it could not continue. [Full Story »] 

Bulldoggs fall to Salem on road

After falling behind 7-0 early in the first quarter, junior Chad Platt scored on an electric 46-yard touchdown run to tie the ball game with 6:59 to play in the first quarter.

What seemed to be a possible battle of two prolific rushing attacks turned one-sided once Salem High School hit their second gear.

WBHS trailed just 14-7 in the second quarter before Salem capitalized on Bulldogg penalties to score a third touchdown at the end of the half.

The final would be 42-7 and saw the Winder-Barrow Bulldoggs drop their eighth game of the season. They continue to search for their first win after coming into the contest with hopes to spoil Salem’s senior night. [Full Story »] 

Loganville defeats WBHS

Visiting Loganville spoiled homecoming for Winder-Barrow High School Friday night with a 42-7 win at W. Clair Harris Stadium.

The loss keeps the Bulldoggs winless this season at 0-7 overall and in Region 8-AAAA play. WBHS has three games remaining this season.

Apalachee High School won its second straight game of the 2011 season this past Friday as they defeated the Bulldogs of Rockdale County High School 34-21.

“We have put in so much hard work, it just feels good to finally get something out of it,” said junior linebacker Chris Morris.

The Wildcat offense found its groove early in the contest and took a commanding 28-0 lead by halftime. [Full Story »]
