While the first two games of the state playoffs have been against worthy opponents, the Apalachee High School coaches and players know the challenge will likely rise to another level this Friday.

The Wildcats are hosting Griffin in a quarterfinal matchup of two 12-0 teams. The Bears were ranked No. 1 in the state in the final regular season poll and have been predicted by some to win it all.

“They are definitely good,” Davis said. “They are worthy of their ranking. They have all the tools and look the part of a state championship contender. They have good size and unbelievable speed at the skill positions.” [Full Story »] 

After spending the weekend preparing for the second round of the playoffs, Apalachee High School head football coach Shane Davis probably summed it up best with a simple, but truthful statement.

“This time of year, records don’t matter,” the Wildcat coach said. “Scores don’t matter either. You don’t dwell on the past. You just try to work on your next opponent. Any problems you have you just try to hide them because if you haven’t fixed them in the first 11 games, you aren’t going to in four days of practice.” [Full Story »] 

Apalachee High School head football coach Shane Davis and his coaching staff were able to bask in the moment of a 10-0 season for a little while anyway.

The game tape of Starr’s Mill, this week’s opponent in the opening round of the Class AAAA state playoffs, did not arrive until late Saturday so there was some time at least for reflection.

“I think it’s something that will mean more once times goes on,” Davis said. “We enjoyed it some Saturday. However, then it was time to go back to work. However, to say it’s nice to be 10-0 would be an understatement.”

The AHS coaches were back to the grind Sunday preparing for the first round which they will host for the first time in school history. It’s something that has been several years in the making for the program. [Full Story »] 

For the Apalachee High School football team, it’s nine regular season opponents down and one to go.

The Wildcats will look to complete a perfect regular season this week when they host Salem High School for Senior Night. After defeating Madison County on the road last Friday, AHS returns home hoping to continue building momentum for the upcoming postseason. [Full Story »] 

The Region 8-AAAA championship has been won but with two games remaining in the 2009 regular season, the Apalachee High School football team still has moutains to climb and goals to reach.

AHS has a chance to finish the regular season undefeated, something head coach Shane Davis said would be a “very special accomplishment.”

“I’ve been coaching for 18 years and never had a team go undefeated,” Davis said. “I helped coach a couple of 9-1 teams and some teams that went 8-2. It shows you how tough it is to do. Winning region titles are tough, but going through the regular season undefeated is even tougher. To do it this year would be a huge task and a great accomplishment if we were able to do it.”

One of the two obstacles standing in the Wildcats’ way of regular season perfection is Madison County.

This Friday’s game for Apalachee High School will not have the hype surrounding it as the previous week’s contest, but it is certainly no less important.

For with a victory this Friday against visiting Heritage, the Wildcats can make school history. A win would wrap up the first ever football region title as AHS would seal the deal for the No. 1 seed from Region 8-AAAA for 2009.

As the 2009 season continues to progress and Apalachee’s undefeated streak remains intact, Wildcat head coach Shane Davis knows a bigger bullseye will appear on his team’s back.

Davis also knows while Loganville — this Friday’s opponent — has two losses, the coach says there is underlying factor in both of those games: turnovers.
