Sunday’s World Crown at Peach State Speedway in Jefferson will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest come from behind victories in the event’s storied 25-year history.

After losing a lap a quarter of the way through the 200 lap event, Russell Fleeman charged back, using the cunning and skill of a veteran driver, and won the crown, the trophy and the check that had eluded him in several tries over the years.

To call the Saturday’s run up to the World Crown at Peach State Speedway wild would be a bit of an understatement.

No less than 20 drivers throughout the race card found their cars disqualified before the end of the night.

But one that had no problems at all was former Jefferson resident Ryan Crane, who dominated the US Auto Sales 100 for Super Late Model racers, taking his second Peach State victory of the year.

Dacula's Russell Fleeman showed that in racing, nothing is certain.

Just 50 laps into Sunday's World Crown at Peach State Speedway, a flat tire sent the 2008 Georgia Asphalt Series champ to the pits, and relegated him a lap down.

But the hard charging Fleeman fought back, got back on the lead lap, then worked his way back to the front to hold off Commerce's Taylor Satterfield and three time World Crown champ Paul Kelley for the win.

It is Fleeman's first victory in the World Crown, a race that has eluded him for several years.

Fill in driver Grant Entfinger, piloting the car normally driven by Watkinsville racer John Wes Townley, put his fill-in position to good use Saturday, as he put the #09 Ford on the pole with a time of 17.817 around Peach State Speedway in Jefferson. [ Full Story » ] 

With 25 years of history, drivers from all around the country are preparing to travel to Peach State Speedway in Jefferson this weekend to take part in the World Crown weekend, with the highlight being an opportunity to add your name to the list of winners, including Darrell Waltrip, Dick Trickle, Rick Crawford and three-time winner Paul Kelley.

Drivers from New York, Colorado, Maine and around the southeast are entered to compete for the right to wear the coveted crown in victory lane, and to take home the Rob Joyce Memorial trophy.

The Lady Eagles of East Jackson became back-to-back region champs Saturday as they beat Jefferson 3-0 in the championship game.

It was a tough region road for the Lady Eagles, who defeated Oglethorpe County 13-0 in their post season opener Tuesday, then moved on to beat Union County 3-1 later that evening. [ Full Story » ] 

Fleeman Scores Second GAS Championship

It was a historic night for the Georgia Asphalt Series as it wrapped up their 2008 season at Peach State Speedway Saturday night, and crowned a 2008 champion.

It appeared that Kyle Fowler was on his way to his first GAS victory after dominating the 100-lap event.

But a determined Dennis Wilder, from Commerce, passed Fowler with two laps remaining to win his first GAS series event in the Hedman Husler Hedders 100. [ Full Story » ] 

According to a report on the National Hot Rod Association's website, a 65 year old Virginia man was fatally injured in a high-speed racing accident Saturday at the Atlanta Dragway.

Bobby Martindale, age 65 of Glen Allen, VA., was racing his Top Alcohol Funny Car when he experienced engine failure at the finish line, according to preliminary reports.

The car continued down the track at a high rate of speed, reportedly overshooting the end of the drag strip.

After taking an early lead, Kyle Fowler looked unstoppable as he roared towards his first career GAS series win at Peach State Speedway Saturday night.

But somebody forgot to tell Commerce driver Dennis Wilder, who stormed out of nowhere to catch and pass Fowler with two laps left to claim his first career GAS series win. Wilder also became the tenth different winner over the 12 race GAS season, a new series record.

Meanwhile, Dacula's Russell Fleeman steered clear of trouble to bring his Ford home in fifth, giving him his second consecutive Georgia Asphalt Series championship.

It was a history making night, as Fleeman's title win made him the first driver in series history to win back-to-back championships.

Chris Whorton, the 2007 Lanier National Speedway champion, showed why he scored that title with a big victory Saturday night in the James Garrison Memorial 100, an ASA Southeast Asphalt Series Pro Late Model event, at Lanier National Speedway.

Whorton held off a hard charge by young Kyle Fowler, who finished second. Pendergrass driver Paul Kelley finished third, while Stephen McCurley and Shawn Simpson rounded out the top five.

Other local finishers inclued Braselton's Jimmy Garmon, who finished eighth, Commerce driver Dennis Wilder in 14th, Taylor Satterfield, of Commerce, in 15th, Joey Senter, of Jefferson, in 15th, former Jefferson resident Ryan Crane in 18th, Dacula's Russell Fleeman in 26th, and Braselton's Shane Sawyer in 29th.

Senter won the pole for the event.
