During the long trip to Rome last Friday for Apalachee High School’s state playoff football game, my mind began to drift back to past years and all the previous road trips I’ve been a part of during this time of the year.

Being a football fan for as long as I’ve been old enough to know the difference between a first down and a field goal, I’ve traveled across the state for regular season outings and state playoff contests. When postseason arrives, it’s usually wise to have a full tank of gas and a map handy because you could end up anywhere.

For with this edition, Barrow County has a new player on the sports scene. I guess you could call it a new contender to use an old boxing analogy.

I think you will like our approach to sports coverage. I’m not a “Johnny Come Lately” when it comes to covering local sports. I’ve been at it a long time. Professionally, I’ve covered sports since 1993 although I’ve been on the sidelines, in gyms and at local fields even longer than that.

I have a strong understanding of what an important learning tool high school, middle school and recreation sports can be when used right. I also understand what local coaches go through when it comes to directing their programs. [Full Story »] 

The Banks County High School football team was in the middle of a hotly contested game against region foe Jefferson last Friday night.

The visiting Dragons entered the contest undefeated and basically unchallenged. No opponent had been able to come close to slowing down Jefferson’s spread offense, which seemed to be getting even more potent with each passing game.

The BCHS Leopards, however, made it known early on they were not going quietly. Coach Blair Armstrong’s team was prepared to give the Dragons their toughest challenge of the season. It was obvious from the opening kickoff. [Full Story »] 

High school football has been described as the All-American sport.

From the heartland of America to all four corners of our great nation, the gridiron sport at this level is indeed something to behold. There is simply something special about Friday night at the local stadium.

In Homer — and at Banks County High School — football is a family tradition for the Bowens. Senior Justin Bowen is a standout player for the Leopards. During the past four years, Justin has grown into one of the top members of the BCHS team. [Full Story »] 

If you had any doubts as to what this year’s Banks County High School football team is made of, you shouldn’t worry any more.
After starting the season 0-2, the Leopards have climbed their way back to .500 overall and more importantly sit at 2-1 in Region 8-AA.

Back-to-back region wins against Dawson County and Rabun County have BCHS looking at a very important home game against North Oconee this Friday. This will be as important a regular season game as a Leopard football team has played in some time.

You can’t help but admire the grit and determination of this team. BCHS ventured to Rabun County last week and recorded a 35-6 victory at a place where it is never easy to win. However, this team was not going to be denied.

After an admittedly frustrating first two weeks of the season, the Banks County High School football team got the train moving in the right direction last Friday night.

Coach Blair Armstrong’s Leopards recorded their first victory of the 2008 season with a 48-27 win against visiting Dawson County. The victory was important not only because it was the first of the still relatively young campaign but because it evened the Region 8-AA record for BCHS at 1-1. Things certainly look a lot rosier when your region mark is 1-1 rather than 0-2. [Full Story »]
