Jefferson defeats Westminster, moves to Elite Eight

After leading for most of the game, the Jefferson Dragons worked hard in the final seconds to hold off a late charge by Westminster to pick up a 58-56 win Wednesday night, and advance into the Elite Eight in AA state playoffs.

After a tight first quarter, the Dragons took firm control of the game in the following 16 minutes. A late surge from Westminster, who scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to challenge. But in the end, Jefferson withstood the charge for the win. [Full Story »]

Dragons defeat Manchester to advance in state play

For 31 minutes, things looked tough for the Dragon Nation, as Jefferson worked to close the gap on the Manchester Blue Devils.

But a three-pointer followed by a tip-in in the last 16 seconds of play left the crowd cheering and meant the Dragons would be continuing on in state play with a one-point victory over Manchester. [Full Story »]

An aggressive Lithia Springs team put a quick end to the state tournament run by the Winder-Barrow High School boys basketball team Friday.

The Bulldoggs dropped a 68-54 contest in the opening round of the Class AAAA tournament ending a season with a long list of accomplishments.

“That’s what I hope people will remember more than this game,” first-year WBHS coach David Sokol said after breaking the contest down. “We accomplished several positive things this season.”

A putback by with just four seconds left on the clock off a missed shot gave the Dragons a one point edge, and that was all Jefferson needed to advance to the next round of state playoff action, as they won 68-67 Friday night.

The Dragons will next play host to Westminster in second round action Tuesday night.

Despite entering the post season with high hopes, the Lady Dragons of Jefferson saw their region tournament play come to an end Saturday, as they fell to Fannin County in the opening game of the region tournament.

Friday’s game opened with the Lady Dragons taking an early advantage, moving out to a 9-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. Jefferson would increase their lead to six points in the second quarter, as they moved out to a 15-9 lead by the end of the half. [Full Story »]

After making it two games into the post season, the Lady Panthers of Jackson County saw their season come to an end with a loss to Franklin County.

The post season came to an end last Thursday for the Jackson County Panthers. After picking up a win against Archer on Wednesday, the Panthers fell in their second post season game against Morgan County.

After falling out of the region tournament last year in the opening round, the Jefferson Dragons were determined not to let history repeat itself this year.

The Dragons not only assured history would not repeat itself, but went on to win the region title Tuesday night with a 58-57 victory over Riverside Military Academy.

State tournament play starts Friday, with Jefferson playing host to either Manchester or Spencer from Columbus. The start time for Friday’s game has yet to be determined. Fans can call the school later this week for the start time. [Full Story »]

The Lady Dragons of Jefferson turn their attention this week to region tournament play after wrapping up their regular season Monday.

Jefferson ended their season by splitting games with Banks County and North Oconee.

The Lady Dragons will begin region tourney play on Saturday at Dawson County, where they will face either Fannin County or Rabun County. [Full Story »]

With an undefeated region record now in the books for the Jefferson Dragons, the next goal is to continue their winning ways in region tournament play.

There’s also the matter of exacting a little revenge. Last year, the Dragons went out in the first round of eliminations after losing to Union County.

The number one seeded Dragons will open region tournament play on Friday at Dawson County, where they’ll face the winner of a matchup between Union County and Fannin County. [Full Story »]
