Madison County High School’s all-time hit leader has revived his baseball career in the Lone Star State.
Calloway, who collected 123 hits for the Raiders from 2001-2004, is playing independent league baseball for the San Angelo Colts, a member of United League Baseball.

The Apalachee High School baseball team was one of the surprises of Region 8-AAAA this past spring.

Coach Mike Cavey’s squad remained in the playoff chase longer than most experts would have predicted. Now Cavey is hoping the progress gained in 2009 will carry over into 2010.

Kentucky team takes World Series title

Last week’s Dizzy Dean 11-year-old World Series title game, held at East Hall Park in Nicholson, was a blow-out of a victory for the team from Jeffersontown, Kentucky, as they recorded a 16-6 victory in four innings to become the World Series champs over the North Point Nationals from Alabama.

Jeffersontown struck early, scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning, while they held the Nationals scoreless in the bottom of the first, despite the Alabama team threatening with runners on the corners.

A solo home run added another run for Jeffersontown in the top of the second, but the Nationals began working their way back into the game in the bottom of the inning by scoring four runs. [Full Story »] 

Kentucky Team Wins Dizzy Dean World Series

The 11-year-old Jeffersontown, Kentucky little league team took home top honors Wednesday from the Dizzy Dean World Series, held in Nicholson.

The Kentucky team defeated the North Port Nationals out of Alabama 16-6 to win in four innings, due to the 10 run rule.

The title game brought the World Series festivities, which began last Thursday with opening ceremonies at East Jackson Comprehensive High School, to a close.

Jackson County just misses title shot at World Series

Play got underway Friday at the Dizzy Dean 11-year-old World Series, being held at East Jackson Park in Nicholson.

Thirty-five teams took to the field in a round robin format, with eight teams winning pool play to advance to a double elimination tournament to play for the championship.

The Jackson County Force was the only local team to make the championship tournament. Other pool winners were the North Port Nationals from Alabama, North West from St. Petersburg, Florida, the Tallahassee Capitals from Florida, Jeffersontown, Kentucky, Fossil Park from Florida, Fulton, Mississippi and the Blast from Panama City Beach, Florida. Productive summer for Diamond Doggs

Coming off a successful spring which saw the Winder-Barrow High School Diamond Doggs advance to the second round of the state playoffs, coach Brian Smith and his returning players continued work right through the month of June.

The WBHS coach said the extra month of practice and games went “very well” and should benefit his players in the long run.

After months of preparation, the big moment for the Jackson County Parks and Rec department is upon us.

Opening ceremonies for the Dizzy Dean 11-Year-Old Baseball World Series are slated to get underway at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Eagle Stadium at East Jackson Comprehensive High School.

As of Monday morning, 34 teams were slated to take part from six states. Three area teams, the Jackson County Force, the Jackson County Bullets and the Jefferson Dragons will be taking part. [Full Story »] 

Jefferson 13U All- Stars win state title

The Jefferson 13-year-old All Stars won the Dizzy Dean State Baseball Tournament in convincing fashion Tuesday night with a 17-2 demolition of Druid Hills. The game was called after 5 innings due to the 10 run mercy rule much to the delight of a packed house at the Jefferson Recreation Complex. This was Jefferson’s first State Baseball Title since 2002.

The Jefferson Parks and Recreation Department hosted the 5 day Tournament that featured 15 teams from all six Dizzy Dean districts.

Recreation Dept. Director Colt Green and Athletic Director Jeremy Smith were both very pleased with the attendance and support of all the parents from across the state. [Full Story »] 

All-star teams battle for state championships

Banks County’s Park and Rec 9-10 year old all-star teams have had a strong season this summer. Both teams made it through to the final tournaments for a chance to win state titles.

Coming up this Friday night in Jefferson, the 9-10 girls team will take on the District seven champs in the first round of the GRPA state tournament. First pitch is at 6 p.m. on the fields behind Jefferson High School.

Win or lose, the girls will play again at 8 p.m. Friday. The championship title will be determined in the final game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The girls, won the District six title after climbing the bracket, defeating Union County in a 12-0 sweep, Towns County 15-4 and for the crown 11-2.
