Wrestlers win King of the Mountain tourney

The Banks County High School varsity wrestlers won the King of the Mountain tournament this past weekend in Towns County. The tournament consisted of 20 teams from Georgia and North Carolina.

The Leopards finished in first place with a score of 225, Lumpkin County finished second with a score of 197.5 and Cherokee, N.C. finished third with a score of 197.

Tournament Champions from BCHS are Mason Patton, 120 weight class, Francisco Hurtado, 126 weight class, Wes Faulkner, 152 weight class, Hayden Dilbeck, 160 weight Class.

Finishing in second place from BCHS was Philip Dean from the 195 weight class. Finishing in third place was Taylor Wood, 106 weight class, Eli Smallwood, 170 weight class and Matthew Dilbeck, 182 weight class.

The Leopards will wrestle at home on December 6th and at the Choo Choo Classic in Morgan County this weekend. The next home match will be December 13.

It was a tie for 14th for the mat Leopards at last week’s traditional state tournament. with three placers Banks County earned 38 points, tie with Buford.

No surprise were in store as Jefferson secured an 11th consecutive state title, and the team’s third class AA state title, with 196.5 points. The mat Dragons edged out runner-up Sonoraville, with 177 points and third place finisher Toombs County at 84.5.

Other local AA team, Jackson County earned 11th with 63.5 points just ahead of North Oconee with 63.

Bringing home three state placers from the traditional tournament, Banks County now focuses on earning a high state finish at the state duals this weekend. The state duals were postponed due to inclement winter weather in January. [Full Story »]

Madison County will be sending four seniors to the mats at the Gwinnett Arena this weekend to compete for state titles.

The Red Raiders sent seven to the East AAAA sectionals last weekend at Loganville to compete for a chance to make it to the state tournament.

Moving on and looking for an opportunity to earn state titles are Cody Phillips, Isaac Ruiz, Kyle Bates and Kyle Gordon. [Full Story »]

Madison County has seven wrestlers moving ahead to the East AAAA sectionals this weekend at Loganville.

Madison County’s mat Raiders finished fifth overall at the 8-AAAA region traditional wrestling tournament at Habersham last week.

Finishing behind Loganville (271.5), Clarke Central (192.5 - tie), Rockdale (192.5 - tie) and Flowery Branch (189), Madison County earned 137.5 points to finish ahead of Heritage (107), Apalachee (105.5), Habersham (79), Salem (68), Winder-Barrow (61.5) and Cedar Shoals (16). [Full Story »]

It is the final step for the mat Leopards, as only one more weekend stands between eight wrestlers and a shot at qualifying for a chance to compete for a state title. This weekend, the Banks County varsity wrestlers send eight of their own to the AA sectionals in Dublin to see who will make the trip Feb. 17 to the Gwinnett Arena to compete for a state title.

After earning a very respectable third place overall at the Area 8-AA Tournament in Jefferson last weekend, Banks County had 11 wrestlers finish with top five accolades and eight of those advance to the sectionals this weekend.

With the level of skill and competitiveness present in the area, Banks County has proven to be a force this year after earning a runner-up position during the area team duals. [Full Story »]

Mat Panthers take sixth at state

The Jackson County wrestling team finished up their season this past weekend with a sixth place finish at the individual state tournament at the Gwinnett Arena with three placers.

Izzy Carrillo-Garcia and Charles Smothers both finished their high school careers in style with state runners-up honors, while Ryan Howe wrapped up his high school career with a third place finish. [Full Story »]

The Jefferson Mat Dragons etched another page into their record book Saturday as they scored their tenth consecutive traditional state title, tying a state record with seven individual champions in the process.
