Region 8-AAAA is not an easy football road to travel.

The Winder-Barrow High School Bulldoggs will look for their first win of 2011 this Friday, but it won’t be easy. Defending region champion Clarke Central will visit W. Clair Harris Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

“Their program is at the level where you want to be,” said WBHS coach David Wagner. “They are a perennial playoff team. They are always a region contender. They are a team who plays home playoff games. They are simply solid from top to bottom.” [Full Story »] 

A perfect day for a cross country meet produced an almost perfect performance for the Winder-Barrow High School program.

The Lady Bulldoggs took first at Saturday’s Mercer University RunFit Sports Invitational as all five runners were in the top 20, with four in the top 10. The WBHS boys were second with each team member excelling on the course.

“It was a fantastic run,” said coach Michael Lofton. “Everything fell into place. We had great weather. You couldn’t ask for a better morning to run.”

Amanda Cope took first for the WBHS girls with an impressive time of 19:29. Caitlin Connell was third in 19:58. Whitley Kennedy (fourth) and Anna Dean (sixth) were also in the top 10. [Full Story »] 

With the stinging overtime loss to Madison County still fresh on the minds of players and coaches at Winder-Barrow High School, the Bulldogg program will look to move forward.

The Winder-Barrow High School cross country teams will get to put their best foot forward this weekend.

The top runners for the varsity Bulldoggs and Lady Doggs will compete at the Mercer RunFit Sports Invitational in Macon.

The showcase event will have several college coaches in attendance, scouting for their programs. [Full Story »] 

An early 21-0 lead was not enough to propel the Winder-Barrow High School football team to victory Friday night.

The Bulldoggs dropped a 42-35 game in overtime to Madison County in Danielsville. The loss dropped WBHS to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in Region 8-AAAA with an open date next Friday.

Senior Winder-Barrow running back Jamonte Riden scorched Madison County for four touchdowns Friday, including runs of 80 and 27 yards, but the visiting Bulldoggs couldn’t hold on to an early lead.

While both Winder-Barrow High School and Madison County High School are coming off major rebuilding seasons, Bulldogg coach David Wagner knows it will be another challenge for his team this Friday when WBHS ventures to Danielsville.

“They are a football team with enough skill players to hurt you,” Wagner said following Monday’s practice session. “They get the football in the hands of the players who can do damage.”

The course was tough and the weather conditions tougher, but the Winder-Barrow High School cross country teams showed a great deal of potential Saturday at a meet held at the University of Georgia Equestrian Center in Bishop.

The varsity girls were sixth overall while the varsity Bulldoggs were 14th. The WBHS junior varsity boys were ninth in their competition.

“Considering the obstacles that were there, this event was wide open,” said WBHS coach Michael Lofton. “There was no shade. It was 95 degrees. The heat was stiffling and sun was intense. We showed the other teams what we are made of by getting after it in this grueling event.” [Full Story »] 

The home softball games for Winder-Barrow High School, scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 6 against Rockdale County, have been pushed back a day.

Lady Bulldogg coach Monty McClure said the games (junior varsity at 4:30 p.m., varsity at 5:30 p.m.) will be played Wednesday because of the wet conditions of the field. Game times remain the same.
