Clarke Central too much for WBHS

The Winder-Barrow High School football team was fresh off its first win since 2009, but that emotion was not enough to carry the Bulldoggs to victory this past Friday night.

WBHS fell 38-7 on the road against Clarke Central as the Gladiators locked up a playoff spot with the win.

It took Clarke Central until midway through the first half to get on the scoreboard on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Johnson to Amir Wilson. [Full Story »]

With the program’s losing streak now over, the Winder-Barrow High School football team will look to make it two victories in a row Friday night.

Standing in the Bulldoggs’ way, however, will be a tough Clarke Central team who, despite having lost three straight, remains a formidable foe with postseason aspirations.

“We have a great deal of confidence now,” said WBHS senior Al Schotter. “Getting a win means so much to our program. We’ll try to keep it going against Clarke Central.” [Full Story »]

In the end, the Winder-Barrow High School football team simply wanted it more.

The Bulldoggs played their most complete game in years and were not going to be denied on this occasion.

The losing streak seemed light years away late Friday night. A win has a way of curing a lot in athletics and that was the case that evening.
“This is great not just for our football team but our entire school and community,” WBHS principal Al Darby said.

Bulldoggs are High Five Sports Team of Week

The Winder-Barrow High School football has earned another victory.

The Bulldoggs are the High 5 Sports Team of the Week following on online poll. WBHS earned 116,106 votes (48%) to defeat second-place finisher Marietta High School, who compiled 95.094 votes (39.3%). Also in the race were Druid Hills, Cambridge and Creekside.

Good Day's Paul Milliken will be hanging out with the Bulldoggs live on Thursday morning during the 8 and 9 a.m. hours of Good Day Atlanta on Fox 5.

A pep rally will be held Thursday beginning at approximately 8:15 a.m.

Homecoming: WBHS welcomes Cedar Shoals

The Winder-Barrow High School football team hasn’t had the opportunity to play within the confines of W. Clair Harris Stadium often this season.

The Bulldoggs will be able to do that this week as they host Cedar Shoals High School for homecoming. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

WBHS is coming off a 28-14 road loss to Loganville while the Jaguars are looking to bounce back after a 27-23 loss to Apalachee in a game where Cedar Shoals held a 10-point halftime advantage.

The Winder-Barrow High School football team had hoped to get into the win column Friday night at Loganville, but the host Red Devils were looking for a first of their own.

LHS took a 28-14 win, the first of 2012 for the Red Devils, who now stands at 2-5 overall and 1-4 in Region 8-AAAAA. For WBHS, the first victory of 2012 will have to wait another week as the Bulldoggs are now 0-7 overall and 0-5 in region play. WBHS has not registered a win since the 2009 season.

“This was a great win for us because we were so close the past two weeks,” said LHS coach Eric Godree. “We’re still turning the ball over too much and that’s frustrating. But our kids handled it well, ran the ball well and threw the ball well. We’ll take a win any day of the week.” [Full Story »] 

Bulldoggs, Red Devils seek first region win

The Winder-Barrow High School football team remains on the road this week as the Bulldoggs attempt to get into the win column when they travel to battle region foe Loganville High School.

The Bulldoggs are coming off a 54-14 loss to Flowery Branch while the LHS Red Devils fell in a close 35-28 game to Apalachee. LHS had 370 yards on the ground on 48 rushes.

While WBHS enters the game 0-6 overall and 0-4 in Region 8-AAAAA, LHS sits at 1-5 overall and 0-4 in region play. The Red Devils’ last two outings have been close including a 28-26 loss to Cedar Shoals as well as last week’s battle with Apalachee. [Full Story »]

All football coaches in 8-AAAAA agree when it comes to toughness it’s hard to top this region.

The Winder-Barrow High School football team continued its journey down the region path last Friday with a 54-14 road loss to Flowery Branch. The Falcons, under the direction of former defensive coordinator and first-year head coach Chris Griffin, showed no signs of overlooking their opponent as they upped their 8-AAAAA mark to 5-0 (5-2 overall.)

“After we started the season 0-2, we learned not to focus on anyone but the next opponent,” Griffin said. “We even stress not looking past the next play.”

Flowery Branch scored on its first six possessions to erase any possibility of an upset. WBHS has shown improvement in their previous two outings, taking Salem to the wire and battling Heritage in a game which was closer than the final score indicated. [Full Story »] 

Bulldoggs prepare for high-flying Falcons

The Flowery Branch High School football team has somewhat of a different look this fall, but the results in region play have been the same.

The Falcons will welcome Winder-Barrow High School this Friday in a Region 8-AAAAA matchup. Flowery Branch (4-2 overall, 4-0 in region) will look to stay on course for a possible region title with a win. For the WBHS Bulldoggs (0-5, 0-3), the game will be another in a line of tough opponents as the WBHS program looks to end a losing streak which dates back to 2009.

First year Flowery Branch head coach Chris Griffin saw his team defeat Apalachee 30-20 last week after falling behind 14-3 at halftime. The Falcons played a tough non-region schedule this season with games against No. 1-ranked Northside Warner Robins and Class AAAAAA foe West Forsyth. [Full Story »] 

Freshman Bulldoggs enter week undefeated

The Winder-Barrow High School freshman football team has been perfect to this point in 2012.

The freshman Bulldoggs recorded their latest win against Eastside 30-14 last week. CeCe Green helped lead the offense with 87 yards on five carries and one score.

Miquan Fulton had a 55-yard run for a score. Noah Chapman was 3-for-4 for 75 yards and two touchdowns. Jay Branch caught all of Chapman’s passes. Ryan Evans rushed for 38 yards and was 1-of-2 on point after attempts. [Full Story »]
