It is usually clear who the front runners for the Heisman trophy are in just the first few weeks of the season.

By the time the presentation rolls around, you can look back to the beginning of the season and see that the winner’s name was among those who were categorized as the “front runner.”

Commonly, the winner is the best player on the best team in the country that is usually playing in the National Title game. But every now and then, the trophy winner won’t actually be on the best team in the country. [Full Story »] 

What do we know about the young NFL season so far?

There are plenty of headlines and big stories out there that it is too difficult to focus on one, it seems that every season there are so many things happening at the beginning that make football fans wonder what is going on.

Let’s start with everyone’s favorite topic, the wonderful replacement referees. The scrubs that the NFL had to lean on when the NFL referees went on strike. The League’s refusal to meet the demands of their referees led to this state of near chaos and crisis within the NFL. [Full Story »] 

With the fall of the No. 2-ranked USC Trojans to Stanford this week comes yet another question of who will be the top non-SEC contender challenging for the national title.

With the Trojans 21-14 loss to Stanford the LSU Tigers moved up to the number 2 spot in the country. Making Alabama and LSU number 1 and number 2 in the country yet again.

Following those two is Oregon at number 3 and Florida State at number 4, two teams that could possibly challenge LSU or Alabama for a title. Both the Ducks and the Seminoles have loads of talent and could both make the claim as the most talented team in the country. [Full Story »] 

For the past several years the Atlanta Falcons have been a playoff contender in the NFC, making the playoffs three of the last four seasons. Unfortunately, they have not won any of those three playoff games.

The Falcons are undoubtedly one of the most talented teams in the league, especially on offense. Matt Ryan calling the shots at quarterback and having multiple options to throw to, including wide receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones as well as future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez. Not to mention the dangerous running backs Michael Turner and Jacquizz Rogers.

Atlanta flexed their offensive muscles in their opening game this season, dropping 40 points on the Kansas City Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium. The Falcons made it look too easy, it all started on their opening drive when they marched down the field to take the initial lead. [Full Story »] 

Labor Day weekend just passed, which means that a new season of college football is finally here.

And with every new season comes new expectations. Heisman hopefuls do their best to make a great first impression in their opening games. National title contenders look to have stellar performances to stay at the top of the rankings. And the defending champions look to reclaim their prize from the season before.

The Boston Red Sox shed over a quarter of a billion dollars in salary when they finalized their nine-player trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers that saw the Red Sox say goodbye to all-stars Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett.

The deal showed two things: 1) that the Red Sox have moved past their redeeming championship contending era and are moving in the direction of rebuilding, and 2) that the Dodgers are making a push to win the World Series now.

Whenever you make a move that adds more than a quarter of a billion dollars to your salary, you are making it very clear that you mean business, The Dodgers want to win and they feel like they are ready now. [Full Story »] 

The quarterback position in the game of football is by far the most vital to the success of the team than any other position is to their respective sports.

Generally, a football team has to have a good quarterback to be successful. Rarely do you see a team win the Super Bowl with a quarterback that is average at best, in almost every case the Super Bowl winning quarterback is near the top of the “best of” list when it comes to quarterbacks.

There is increasing pressure on quarterbacks to be at the top of their game to achieve the success on the field that everyone is looking for. There is no doubting the pressure, everyone can see it. Players feel it, fans sense it, and coaches try their best to minimize it. [Full Story »] 

As the closing ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics take place I think back to the many wonderful moments for the United States of America in this year’s Olympics.

This nation saw one of its top swimmers, Michael Phelps, become the most decorated Olympian of all time when he brought his total medal count to twenty-two, eighteen of which are gold medals.

Phelps had a shaky start (which for him is a silver medal) but regained his composure as the Olympics went on and placed his name in the history books. [Full Story »]

Maybe Usain Bolt winning the gold medal in the 100m dash would be a good spectacle to see?
