In a sports world filled with controversy after controversy it is rare to come across an actual professional athlete who truly serves the role as a role model. Our generation has such a shortage of true role models in professional sports and, unfortunately, we had to say farewell to one of them when Derek Jeter played his last game in the majors just over a week ago.
In an age where parents are ashamed to let their kids watch most professional athletes for various reasons, Jeter truly fit the mold for what a true role model is. This was a guy that you never heard anything bad about and always seemed to do the right thing. Jeter will forever be remembered by Yankees fans as one of the greatest and most heroic Yankees to ever play in New York, but in general he will also be remembered by baseball fans (and sports fans in general) as one of the greatest models of excellence in sports.
So many professional athletes abuse their role in society and make a mockery out of themselves in one way or another, but it has been such a pleasure to watch Jeter continuously hold himself to a higher standard. Now I will admit, I am not a Yankees fan — in fact, I really dislike the Yankees. But I have never been able to hate on Jeter, and I mean, how could you?
