A top 30 finish for the Madison County mat Red Raiders at the state traditional tournament Saturday was capped with two state placers.

Isaac Ruiz earned fourth place honors at 145 lbs last weekend at the Gwinnett Arena, while teammate Cody Phillips brought home a sixth place state finish at 125 lbs.

It was a tie for 14th for the mat Leopards at last week’s traditional state tournament. with three placers Banks County earned 38 points, tie with Buford.

No surprise were in store as Jefferson secured an 11th consecutive state title, and the team’s third class AA state title, with 196.5 points. The mat Dragons edged out runner-up Sonoraville, with 177 points and third place finisher Toombs County at 84.5.

Other local AA team, Jackson County earned 11th with 63.5 points just ahead of North Oconee with 63.

Bringing home three state placers from the traditional tournament, Banks County now focuses on earning a high state finish at the state duals this weekend. The state duals were postponed due to inclement winter weather in January. [Full Story »] 

Armstrong resigns as AD/head coach

Banks County High School Athletic Director and head football coach Blair Armstrong has tendered his letter of resignation effective as of March 10.

Armstrong, who came to Banks County in 2007, led the football team in breaking a decade long playoff drought with the successful 2008 campaign and then completed the most recent season, 7-3, the highest win-loss record since 1997.

Armstrong will leave Banks County to take a position as the head football coach at North Forsyth High School replacing Jared Zito. North Forsyth is a Region 6, 5A school and was coached by Zito since 2007. The North Forsyth Raiders went 5-6 last season.

BC sets sights on state tourney

It is the final step for the mat Leopards, as only one more weekend stands between eight wrestlers and a shot at qualifying for a chance to compete for a state title. This weekend, the Banks County varsity wrestlers send eight of their own to the AA sectionals in Dublin to see who will make the trip Feb. 17 to the Gwinnett Arena to compete for a state title.

After earning a very respectable third place overall at the Area 8-AA Tournament in Jefferson last weekend, Banks County had 11 wrestlers finish with top five accolades and eight of those advance to the sectionals this weekend.

With the level of skill and competitiveness present in the area, Banks County has proven to be a force this year after earning a runner-up position during the area team duals. [Full Story »] 

Lady Tigers On 4-Game Streak

It was a good week for the Commerce Lady Tigers who beat Oglethorpe, Social Circle and Lakeview Academy, putting together their best winning streak of the season and locking up the number two seed in 8-A North.

Commerce was scheduled to travel to Towns County on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.

The Lady Tigers will try to end the season on a winning note Friday night when they host Tallulah Falls, which is winless in region play. [Full Story »]

Jackson County’s girls’ team has won five-straight games, leads the subregion at 2-0 and is off to a 7-3 start.

But don’t expect Lady Panther coach John Hawley and his team to get too concerned with anything other than preparation following this early success.

Well, Jackson County (7-3, 2-0) continues to improve in the wins department.

The Panthers downed Hart County 49-46 in a key subregion road game Tuesday night.

Savannah Roncadori nailed a 12-foot jumper late to put Jackson County up 47-46 and Bre Drew hit two free throws with 18 seconds remaining to help seal the win. [Full Story »] 

Jefferson wins Panther Invitational

Jefferson racked up the first of what it hopes is several tournament championships this season as the Dragons chase more state titles this winter.

The 10-time defending traditional state champions and nine-time defending dual champions began their tournament schedule by winning this past weekend’s Panther Invitational at Jackson County behind five individual first-place finishers and a host of other wrestlers who placed.

Winning their respective weight classes in the 26-team, Friday-Saturday event were Isaac Kelly (119-lb.), Cason Thurmond (125-lb.), Clay Richardson (130-lb.), Cain Finch (145-lb.) and Forrest Przybysz (171-lb.). [Full Story »]

As the expansive Jefferson wrestling trophy case grows heavier, so does the pressure.

The mat Dragons have won an unprecedented 10 straight traditional state wrestling titles and nine consecutive dual titles, but the joy of those victories is tempered often with the expectation to keep it going.

“You ought to feel good and comfortable about your team and program and everything, and, of course, we do,” coach Doug Thurmond said. “Most people out there would feel great if you were in the top four in the state. But the pressure to keep winning seems to get tougher if that makes sense. It really does.”
