Shane Davis, like many in the high school coaching profession, has worked at his share of places.

However, Davis may have very well found a place to call home for a long time in Winder at Apalachee High School.

Davis, has guided the Wildcats to a perfect 10-0 regular season, the first region title in school history and has helped the program earn the right to host state playoff games. All-in-all, it has been a remarkable ride for a coach who is now in his fifth season at AHS. [Full Story »] 

The way things played out last Friday at R. Harold Harrison Stadium, it looked as if the Apalachee High School Wildcats were the team battling for the postseason.

Visiting Salem needed a victory to clinch a playoff spot while AHS had already wrapped up the Region 8-AAAA title and stood at 9-0 overall. However, the host Wildcats played one of their better games of the season on their way to a 37-14 win.

Some would say Apalachee High School football coach Shane Davis has it pretty good.

Davis and his Wildcats were undefeated going into last Friday’s road game against Madison County. Entering the contest at 8-0, the Wildcats were looking to build some momentum after two close one-point victories.

Davis and the AHS team got what they wanted with a 31-14 victory against the Red Raiders. The Wildcats now stand at 9-0 overall and inched up to No. 7 in the most recent Georgia High School Daily AAAA Top 10 poll.

The region championship had been secured and it was time for Apalachee High School head football coach Shane Davis to get a bath.

This bath consisted of the water in one of the coolers from the Wildcat sideline. Davis, enjoying the moment as much as anyone, didn’t resist or try to run away. The fifth-year AHS coach was drenched and he loved every second of it.
Such is the case when you’ve just won the first-ever football region title in school history and maintained your perfect undefeated season.

How big was last Friday’s game between Apalachee and Loganville?

Consider this: No less than two Atlanta television stations, two area radio stations and four area newspapers were on hand to cover the Region 8-AAAA matchup.

For once, the pre-game hype lived up to its billing as the Wildcats and Red Devils slugged it out like to boxers going toe-to-toe in the ring, both refusing to give in until finally one emerged victorious all the while knowing they had been in the ultimate test.

A 21-point second quarter proved to be enough of a cushion for the Apalachee High School football team during its road game against Habersham Central last Friday.

While the host Raiders would attempt to rally in the second half, AHS would hold on to improve to 6-0, defend its state ranking and, more importantly, remain the only undefeated team in Region 8-AAAA.

An interception from Qunitavis Cofield ended one fourth quarter Habersham scoring drive while John Ansley swatted away a pass attempt in the final minute to seal the deal. [Full Story »] 

This week Apalachee High School football coach Shane Davis is having to deal with more than the usual preparations for an upcoming opponent.

With his players out of school for fall break, Davis is having to try and keep his team focused on the task at hand: an upcoming road trip to Habersham Central Friday. It’s another in a line of 10 Region 8-AAAA games for the Wildcats, ranked ninth in the state, and Davis knows each game is just as important as the last one.

For Apalachee High School football coach Shane Davis, this week is rivalry week for his team.

However, Davis also knows the game is one of 10 Region 8-AAAA contests and he will do his best to emphasize that to his players as they prepare to host Winder-Barrow High School Friday at 7:30 p.m.

“We don’t try to downplay the rivarly,” Davis said. “I do let them know that it is another one of our region games and that is the really important thing about it.”

The stickers for big plays on the back of the helmets for Apalachee High School football players display a simple word: “Pride.”

That word perhaps best describes what the Wildcats played with last Friday in their key Region 8-AAAA showdown against visiting Clarke Central. A sound performance on defense, by the offensive line and overall by coach Shane Davis’ team led to a 21-7 win and leaves AHS as the lone undefeated region member.

“We showed a lot of posie,” Davis said. “Our defense played extremely well. At times, they would move the football a little, but it was nothing consistent.” [Full Story »]
