Several football seasons ago I came to know Shane Davis.
It was before he became head coach at Apalachee High School. At the time, Davis was still building his resume as an assistant coach and he worked for a stretch at a high school in my hometown.
Davis was part of a strong coaching staff back during those seasons in the 1990s at that Middle Georgia school. Those teams, and coaches, are still talked about fondly back in my hometown to this day. In fact, the hometown program really hasn’t been on par since that group of coaches moved on.
When Davis was hired at AHS a decade ago, I was not covering the program as I worked at another area newspaper. However, I clearly recall thinking the Wildcats had hired a sound coach, and just as important, a sound person. After a season of adjustment, Davis quickly made his impact felt within the football program at AHS. His teams went to the playoffs four consecutive seasons with the highlight being an undefeated regular season and region championship in 2009. That year’s team advanced to the third round of the playoffs, hosting all three games.
