Crane Dominates For Peach State Win

It was an eventful night for racers at Peach State Speedway Thursday, as the track hosted the Toyota Tundra Independence 125 for the Georgia Asphalt Series, the longest event for the tour this year.

A crowd estimated to be in excess of 2,500 watched as Ryan Crane from Panama City, FL, in only his second race at Peach State, ran away from the field for the victory.

It was Crane’s first GAS series race to boot.

“It’s not many times you get a car that runs like that,” Crane said. “We worked real hard on it, and got it where it would hold out for a long race. Man, was it fun!” [Full Story »] 

Local racer qualifies for national championships

Paul Nelson, Hoschton, has qualified for the 27th annual Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch, the largest amateur motocross race in the world.

Nelson, age 14, competed against 20,000 hopefuls from across America to earn one of just 1386 qualifying positions.

I was listening this past weekend to the classic “Prairie Home Companion” radio program on my local NPR affiliate Saturday evening as I drove home from Atlanta. Peach State Up For Sale - Racing To Continue As Scheduled

Track officials have confirmed that Peach State Speedway, the half-mile raceway outside of Jefferson, is up for sale.
An advertisement appeared last week in the Athens Banner-Herald listing the track and the 53 acres it sits on for $2.5 million.

Track promoter Vince Whitmire says, however, everything is business as usual.

It was 60 years ago this week that the racing world lost a driver that many felt would have been an early NASCAR star.

On May 16, 1948, Swayne Pritchett of Baldwin lost his life due to injuries sustained in a racing accident in Jefferson, GA.

Atlanta Dragway Racer Grabs ‘Pinks All Out’ Prize

The popular Speed TV show, ‘Pinks All Out,’ came to Atlanta Dragway this past weekend to tape an episode of its series. Well over 20,000 spectators (a one-day attendance figure rivaled only by the NHRA Southern Nationals) packed the grandstands on both sides of the track. Fans received their money’s worth during the event, which featured nearly 500 “little guy” racers vying for a spot in the 16-car field that the show revolves around.

Event winner Paul Smith Jr., an Atlanta Dragway regular from Alpharetta, said his first reaction after finding he had made the 16-car field was disbelief. His reaction times were key to his success. He needed every bit, as he squeaked out his first-round win by a mere .0015 seconds against Commerce racer Jody Blalock’s incredibly quick ’49 Hudson. In the final round setup, Smith won the first two runs against competitor “Wild” Bill Jones’ Lake City, FL-based ’71 Mustang, making a third pass unnecessary.
