The Lady Leopards’ basketball team is coming off a busy summer schedule. The team wrapped up their summer activities June 27.

Among the activities the Lady Leopards participated in this summer were several one to four day camps at Hart County, Madison County, Jefferson, Jackson County and at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC.

Coach Jerry King said that there were 15 players who participated in the camps, out of which five ladies had perfect attendance. [Full Story »] 

Banks County will have three Lady Leopards competing in the girls’ state track meet May 14-16 at Hughes Mills Stadium in Albany.

Jessica Denton qualified in the discus during Saturday’s 8-AA region meet at East Jackson. Denton’s throw of 93’6” earned her the trip to the state meet.

Dee Dee Cannon made qualification as runner-up in the 100-meter with a 13.89 finish.

Maggie McCoy made the state cut as region champion in the 800m run with her personal best time of 2:36.78.

The Lady Leopard netters made a huge accomplishment this season, returning to the state playoffs after over a five-year absence.

The ladies ended their season against Pepperell in Lindale last Wednesday in the first round of the playoffs. Pepperell defeated the Lady Leopards 3-2, but coach Lisa Thomas was still pleased with the performance of her team.

“Each girl played her best and being able to go to the first round of the state playoffs was a huge accomplishment for each of the girls,” Thomas said. “I know this is just the beginning of our success as a team and we are already looking forward to next year's season.”

Banks County’s Lady Leopard netters won a spot to the state playoffs.

The Lady Leopards will face Pepperell High School today (Wednesday) at 3:30 p.m. in the first round of the playoffs.

Banks’ lady netters earned their playoff trip after defeating Fannin County in the first match of the region tournament last week. The Lady Leopards finished third overall in the region.

“This match was an especially exciting win because this win ensured us going to the state playoffs,” said coach Lisa Thomas. “This season has been very fulfilling and rewarding for the team and we hope to continue to win our matches so we can go farther in the state playoffs.”

Despite several postponements and rain delays, the Banks County Leopards’ tennis teams finally were able to play the deciding match against East Jackson.

Tuesday morning looked like it was going to cause another rain delay, but the clouds cleared and the tennis teams took to the courts to defeat East Jackson and secure a spot in the region tournament.

Tomorrow, Thursday, the Leopards’ boys and girls teams will face Fannin County at 11 a.m. at East Jackson High School in the first round of the region tournament.

Yesterday, Banks County defeated East Jackson boys 3-2 and the Lady Leopards swept East Jackson 5-0.

“This was a very exciting win for us because it ensured our spot in the region tournament,” said coach Lisa Thomas. “The girls have had a great season and we are looking forward to playing in the region tournament. I am very proud of the team and think that we couldn't have asked for a better regular season. I am looking forward to what the rest of the season has to offer.”

The Leopards defeated East Jackson 3-2 and marked the seventh year in a row that the team will advance to the region tournament.

“We are real proud of these guys and are very excited,” said coach Mike Ruth. “This is seven years in a row and we have been very fortunate. We are very excited about making it to Thursday and will meet the challenge when we get there."

A new face will be in the Lady Leopards dugout come softball season.

Dean Goodwin will take the reins as the head coach of the Banks County softball program this fall as he looks to build upon the experience the team has gained under the leadership of Josh Lord.

With 15 years of coaching experience from college ball and AAAAA schools to A schools, Goodwin is looking forward to getting started with the Lady Leopards.

“[Banks County] has had a good bit of success and what we need to do is keep that success and build the program even more.” Goodwin continued, “It is not about winning or losing but about building the program and the players knowing your expectations.”

The Lady Leopards will have some high expectations to reach as they get accustomed to Goodwin’s style and coaching manner. The summer will prove to be a very important time for the softball program as Goodwin sets his expectations and the athletes get to know him. [Full Story »] 

The Banks County Leopards’ boys and girls soccer teams picked up a senior night win over Lakeview last week.

The Lakeview game was rescheduled from the previous week and the Leopards took an 8-1 win while the Lady Leopards picked up their third win of the season 6-4.

The night was also senior night for the soccer team.

Senior boys include Jonathan Yang, Alex Vang, Marco Olandez, Donald Jordon, Pedro Mendoza, Lang Vue, Jacob Samples, Austin Crowe, Jason Jeong, Javier Padron, Koewy Heu, Ed Diaz, Rojelio Briceno, Ermain Corona and Brian Linn.

Senior Lady Leopards are Jessica Grisham, Brittany Andrews, Kaylee Johnston, Tori Heu, Lacy Saxon and Sarah Wolf.

Wet weather has prevented the BCHS tennis teams from playing the deciding match against East Jackson.

Last week’s match was rained out on Thursday, so the teams agreed to use this week’s scheduled match on Tuesday. However, a quick shower ended the match before it started.

Banks County will try again on Thursday to work in the match that decides which school, Banks or East Jackson, will make it into the region tournament. With forecasts predicting rain to continue, the Tuesday, April 14, after the Leopards return from spring break has been set as the fall-back date if today is a wash. This would preempt the scheduled Towns County game on that date. [Full Story »]
