The main goal of the Apalachee High School offense is to run the football.

That’s what teams which run the Wing-T offense do. However, that certainly doesn’t mean that pass plays are not used and cannot be successful. Look at the Wildcats in recent games for evidence of that.

The combination of quarterback Clint Ashe and receiver Jermaine Smith have made for quite the passing duo. And all of it has come out of the Wing-T formation. [Full Story »] 

Summer a busy time for Wildcats' Miller

Most high school football coaches will quickly tell you the summer is vital to preparation for the upcoming season.

Apalachee High School offensive coordinator Joel Miller would certainly agree.

“To me, the summer is possibly the most important time,” Miller said. “In the spring, we were successful in implementing our core plays, we use summer workout times to get numerous repetitions running those plays. The kids having a good grasp and understanding of the offense is important, especially this season when we will only have two weeks to prepare for our scrimmage, where in the past we have had three weeks.” [Full Story »]

Many of the goals the Apalachee High School football coaches set for their players this spring were met.

Head coach Shane Davis always likes to establish a depth chart in the spring and for the most part that was done the past two weeks.

“There are still a few questions,” Davis said Sunday night as he finishes breaking down the spring game. “Of course, there may still be questions once the season starts. However, when it comes to our first and second string players we are in pretty good shape.” [Full Story »]

At Apalachee High School spring football practice, the usual people you expect to see are there. Wildcat coaches, players, trainers and personnel are there like they always are each spring practice.

However, there have also been several visitors to recent spring practice sessions in the form of college scouts who have their eye on numerous AHS players.

“It’s been a busy time,” Wildcat head coach Shane Davis said. “Of course, that’s good. It’s good for our kids to get this attention. I know for the past week and a half Coach (Matt) Sorrells has had to handle the weight room by himself because I’ve been busy talking with recruiters.” [Full Story »]

The playoffs are now out of reach for the Apalachee High School football team for 2011. The Wildcats will now have to play for pride.

Ironically, based on how well the team has performed in the past few seasons, it’s something AHS should be uniquely qualified to do.

The Wildcats host Cedar Shoals Friday for Homecoming and will look to close out the final three games of 2011 season on a strong note. AHS coach Shane Davis said he believes his players will have the right mental attitude for the contest. [Full Story »]

The fortunes have turned in the last couple of weeks for the Apalachee High School football team.

However, Wildcat head coach Shane Davis knows a mountain of a challenge awaits this Friday.

AHS will host Clarke Central Friday at 7:30 p.m. as the Wildcats look to keep their postseason hopes alive against the defending Region 8-AAAA champion. [Full Story »]

Shane Davis has been in the coaching profession long enough to know that almost all programs have to endure some bumps in the road. It’s just the nature of the business.

Yet, Davis is actually facing it for the first time as a head coach and the coach said earlier this week he only had to go through it once as an assistant. Still, it doesn’t make it any easier.

“It’s not any fun,” Davis said of the Wildcats’ 0-3 start in 2011. “You think about all the hard work the kids put in during the offseason and you hate for them to be going through this. However, we can feel sorry for ourselves or go back to work. There have been a lot of teams in the position we are in now and they were able to bounce back and we can too. We have to remember this feeling and work to make sure we don’t go through it again.” [Full Story »] 

FOOTBALL: AHS falls to Salem on road

The Apalachee High School football team fell to 0-3 overall as well as 0-3 in Region 8-AAAA following a 14-7 loss to Salem in Conyers Friday night.

Both teams scored rather quickly in the first quarter and the game appeared to be setting up as an offensive shootout. Instead, a defensive battle emerged with the game remaining deadlocked at 7-7 until the fourth quarter when the Seminoles scored what turned out to be the game winner.

"It doesn't feel any better tonight," AHS coach Shane Davis said. "It's not going to feel any better until we win."

Apalachee High School gave Flowery Branch its toughest challenge to this point in 2011, but the Wildcats still fell 42-20 Friday night at R. Harold Harrison Stadium.

AHS is now 0-2 overall and 0-2 in Region 8-AAAA. The Wildcats will look to get into the win column next Friday when they travel to Salem High School in Conyers.

FOOTBALL: AHS looks to ground Falcons

It’s no secret the Flowery Branch High School football team has a high-powered offense.

However, Apalachee High School football coach Shane Davis is almost equally impressed by the defensive unit the Falcons put on the field. The combination of a high-powered offense, a stingy defense and even strong special teams play makes Flowery Branch the favorite at this point in Region 8-AAAA. It’s what has had Davis and his coaching staff putting in plenty of work the past week as the Falcons visit R. Harold Harrison Stadium Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

“There is so much talk about their offense that their defense gets overshadowed,” Davis said. “In reality, they are very strong on the defensive side of the football. Going back to last season, we scored a good bit on them but a lot of that came on big plays. We were able to get our guys in space and to the second and third level of their defense. Traditionally, they don’t let that happen. Their defense fires off the football extremely hard.” [Full Story »]
