Swim Doggs set for state

Final preparations were being made this week by the group of Winder-Barrow High School swimmers who have qualified for the AAAAA state competition at Georgia Tech Friday and Saturday.

Coach Jennifer Blevins and coach Amanda Partee-Manders will see eight of their swimmers compete at the highest level of competition later this week.

“We want to get as many of our swimmers into the final as possible,” Blevins said during Monday afternoon’s practice session. “We hope this will be our best showing of the year. We have already qualified more swimmers for state than ever before.”

Bulldogg swimmers Jared Glenn, Ryan Hendrickson, Nelson Lofton and Dakota Kay will compete in the medley relay at state while Mitchell Buttler, Ian Hentenaar, Alex Hentenaar and Quinn McDaniels will compete in the 200 free and 400 free. [Full Story »] 

Swim Doggs look for strong finish to regular season

With the state meet moving into view, the Winder-Barrow High School swim team will seek to finish strong and qualify for state or improve already established state times.

“The last two meets we have are some of the most exciting of the seasons,” Swim Dogg coach Jennifer Blevins said. “This Saturday, we swim at the Clarke-Oconee invitational.

This meet usually has over 30 schools and has some of the best swimmers in the area competing. UGA has a deep, cold, fast pool and some of the season’s fastest times are always turned in at this meet. This meet also provides all of the swimmers with one of two of their last chances to meet or lower a state qualifying time.”

WBHS will also compete at Westminster, which will be the last chance to meet state times. [Full Story »] 

Swim Doggs dive back into competition Saturday

After a successful start to the season almost a month ago, the Winder-Barrow High School swimmers will return to the pool Saturday.

WBHS is set to swim at the Ruby Fulbright Aquarium in Clarkesville in a meet hosted by Habersham Central. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.

“We are very excited to get back into the swing of having meets,” said Winder-Barrow coach Jennifer Blevins. “All of us are ready to get back to competition.” [Full Story »] 

BRIDGES: Track upgrade will benefit WBHS program

Winder-Barrow High School has a storied history when it comes to its track program.

Even today, athletes qualify every spring for the state meets in Albany and Jefferson. Considering the program’s history, it’s great to see the track at W. Clair Harris Stadium receiving a makeover this summer.

“Getting a new track is something that WBHS was in desperate need of,” said Jennifer Blevins, who helps guide the school’s track program. “The track was worn down to the concrete in several places, the lines were difficult to see, the surface lost its cushioning and many runners were experiencing injuries due to running on such an awkward surface. The high jump area was slick and many jumpers would slip on their approach causing falls and scaring some athletes out of a strong performance.” [Full Story »] 

Moody to swim at next level

Winder-Barrow High School senior Clara Moody signed with South Georgia College during a ceremony held last week.

Also attending were sister Kaylie Moody, brother Mark Moody, mother Wendy Moody and father Jeff Moody.

Several of Moody’s WBHS teammates were there to support her during the event including, from left, Jared Glenn, Mitchell Buttler, Quinn McDaniels, Paul King, Ashley Cook, Moody, coach Jennifer Blevins and Ryan Nowakowski. Moody competed in several events for the Swim Doggs including the freestyle and butterfly.

Lady Doggs finish spring at state track

The distance running tandem for the Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldoggs competed on the big stage last week in Albany at the state track meet.

Whitley Kennedy, Amanda Cope and Caitlin Connell each completed their 2012 seasons with quality showings at the AAAA state meet. Cope (11:46.94) was 11th in the 3,200-meter run while teammate Connell was 13th (11:52.54) in the event. Connell has now completed her standout WBHS career and will run for Kennesaw State next season.

Kennedy, competing in the 800-meter dash, was 10th in the event in 2:24.03. She was less than three seconds from eighth place, which was needed to reach the finals. [Full Story »] 

Strong showing for WBHS track at Dacula

The Winder-Barrow High School track teams both earned top six finishes at the Dacula Invitational Friday.

Most all events were completed before weather conditions turned ugly Friday night in the area.

Swim Doggs complete season at state

The Winder-Barrow High School swim team capped a successful season with an appearance at the state meet.

Mitchell Buttler, Quinn McDaniels, Alex Hentenaar and Jake Hester competed in the 200 medley relay for the Swim Doggs Friday morning at Georgia Tech.

“The meet started off with huge excitement,” said coach Jennifer Blevins. “We were in the first heat of the first race. I remember looking at how still the water was and being so excited for all of the boys. We were winning the race most of the heat and ended up fourth. Every team deserved to be there and was trying to swim their best. Although the boys did not lower their time, they all swam a great race and have already started working on a plan for next year. The relay will only be losing Jake, who is a senior, but will be gaining an amazing swimmer in rising ninth grader Ian Hentenaar.” [Full Story »] 

Family Tradition: Hentenaar continues excellence for WBHS in pool

Hank Williams Jr. had a smash hit song back in 1979 about a certain kind of “Family Tradition.”

While the country music singer related to the wild life, Winder-Barrow High School’s Alex Hentenaar knows about a different kind of “family tradition.” For Hentenaar, the tradition centers around a swimming pool and being one of the top athletes for the WBHS Swim Doggs.

“Alex is an amazing young man,” said WBHS coach Jennifer Blevins. “He comes from a large family including older sister Caitlin; older brother Billy and then younger brother, Ian. Caitlin and Billy are both students at the University of Georgia with Billy being a member of the Red Coat band. Both Caitlin and Billy swam for me when they were at Winder-Barrow and Ian will be with us next year. Needless to say, I will have 13 years of coaching all of the Hentenaar children. They are a great group of kids and I would not trade them for anything.” [Full Story »] 

WBHS swim coach enjoys roles as teacher, coach, mentor

Due to the differing nature of each sport, high school coaches often take varying approaches in working with their respective athletes.

Swimming is an individual sport in many ways although team scores are kept and compiled. For Winder-Barrow High School swim coach Jennifer Blevins, there are a number of methods she uses to motivate her athletes in an attempt to drive them to do their best.

“Coaching swimming is definitely different,” Blevins said. “First of all, the athletes don’t have as much control of their breathing as they do in any other sport. This is always an interesting concept to teach the swimmers. They have to find a breathing pattern and get used to limited air. It is definitely a learning process and my new swimmers are the ones who grow the most in this area. Yet, swimming is a sport that can get someone into shape quick and is no impact so the pressure of being on land is not pressed onto the body.” [Full Story »]
