Jefferson coach Jason Gibson isn’t making any Joe Namath-esque predictions regarding his generally inexperienced squad this season.

But give them time, and the Lady Dragons — who start the season Saturday against West Hall — just may emerge as the surprise team of Region 8-AA.

“If the young kids develop and improve, we feel like we’ll be able to compete and be right in the mix for the region championship,” Gibson said.

Those who do have some experience are projected to get the starting nod early on for Jefferson, which lost its top two scorers from last year’s 10-16 team. [Full Story »] 

Jefferson boys’ basketball coach Bolling DuBose doesn’t mind his team flying under the radar this year in the preseason.

He probably prefers it that way, actually, since it serves as added motivation for a team returning six seniors off a Final Four squad.

“All they’ve heard since last season when the year was over is ‘y’all aren’t going to be any good next year because Darius (Minor) and J.J. (Damons) aren’t here,’” DuBose said, referring to Jefferson’s two graduated stars from last year.

While it’s true that Jefferson lost its top two scorers — Minor and Damons — the Dragons plan to play the same brand of basketball that has won them seven region titles in the last 10 years. [Full Story »] 

Sure Jackson County’s wrestling team will experience change this season.

Seven spots in the lineup need filling and the Panthers have relocated to a region that includes stalwart Jefferson and a host of other formidable teams.

That doesn’t mean the focus strays from the norm at Jackson County, which finished no. 6 in Class AAA last year.
“The goal is no different than any other year — high expectations,” coach Jason Powers said.

Specifically, Powers expects Jackson County — which joins Region 8-AA — to be in the running for a return trip to the state duals in January and a big year at the traditional state meet come February. [Full Story »]

Local pride on the line for Jefferson, East Jackson

No banner or trophy will be awarded Friday but there is one lucrative piece of non-hardware available: county-wide bragging rights.

In what’s being billed informally as the “Jackson County championship,” Jefferson (4-4, 2-3) will face East Jackson (3-5, 2-3) at home at 7:30 p.m. While nothing more than pride is at stake, it’s enough to motivate two teams that are out of state playoff contention.

“It would mean a lot,” Jefferson quarterback Bryant Shirreffs said of the unofficial county title. “We’ve been talking about it … We still, obviously, have a shot at it.” [Full Story »]
