Winter weather sets state tourney this week

The inclement weather seen all over the northern part of the state last week has thrown scheduling for the final two events in high school wrestling forward and, in turn, backwards as well.

With the state sectionals having to be cancelled, that means that the State Championships, scheduled for this weekend at the Gwinnett Arena, will now revert back to its previous four-day format. [Full Story »] 

Harper Takes 10th At State Meet

East Jackson Comprehensive High School’s lone participant in the girls’ state track meet in Albany recorded a tenth-place finish and set a new
personal best height.

Jessie Harper cleared 4’10” in the high jump, her best jump on record. It was good enough for a tenth-place finish in in an event won by Westminster.

Coach Steve Collins said the trip was a “good first experience” for Harper, who had placed second in the high jump in the region finals at East Jackson earlier in the month to qualify for state.

Eagles Perform Strong At Oglethorpe

With the boys’ region meet looming on the horizon this week and the girls’ region set for the following week, the East Jackson Eagles track and field teams continue to prepare for what they hope will be a good showing.

East Jackson’s boys took top honors over Jackson County and Franklin County in a meet at Jackson County on Thursday. The Eagles scored 67 points to Jackson County’s 55 and Franklin’s 39.

The girls, meanwhile, found themselves trailing at the Jackson County meet, scoring 44 points to winner Franklin’s 55 and Jackson County’s 50. [Full Story »] 

EJCHS Opens Post-season Against Fannin Fri.

After back-to-back losses to Banks County, the East Jackson Eagles came back to pick up their third region win of the season on Friday.

That win locks the Eagles into fourth in the region, and sets up their first post-season pairing.

That will come against Fannin County in a best two out of three on Friday. [Full Story »]

Last week proved to be frustrating for the East Jackson Eagles who lost to region foes North Oconee and Jefferson.

Lady Eagles Defeat Banks County

The East Jackson Lady soccer Eagles picked up a pair of wins last week.

The week started with a home stand against region opponent Social Circle. The girls won 4-0 to improve their record to 3-3, while the boys suffered a 3-1 loss.

Next up was a trip to Banks County, where the girls won 3-1 and the boys fell 2-0.

On Saturday, East Jackson traveled to Athens Academy for another region pairing. The boys came away with their third loss in a row, dropping 10-0 to the undefeated Spartans.

The girls suffered an 8-0 shutout by the Lady Spartans.

East Jackson will host Oglethorpe this (Wednesday) afternoon at 5:00.

Eagles Place Fourth In Invitational

The East Jackson Eagles track teams both took home fourth place honors in the Eagle Invitational at EJCHS on Saturday, their first meets of the season.

The girls finished with 64 points, trailing Dawson County, Oglethorpe County and Habersham Central.

Last week, the boys totaled 56 points for their efforts, finishing behind Oglethorpe County, Habersham Central and Banks County.

Both teams will travel to Barrow County Saturday for the Winder Relays.

Eagles Drop Opener To Banks

East Jackson’s tennis season got off to a rough start last Thursday as the Eagles dropped both boys’ and girls’ matches to Banks County.

The boys lost 4-1, while the girls were shut out 5-0.

For the boys, their lone win came from the number one doubles team of Tommy Ramsey and Tsin Nuy Ly.

In a rematch on Monday, East Jackson hosted Banks County, and this time the boys came away with a 4-1 win.

John Kesler won at number two singles, as did Tony Johnson at number three singles. [Full Story »] 

East Jackson Falls To Lakeview, Looks For A Win On The Road

The East Jackson Eagles were hoping to shake off the cold from the last week’s snowy weather with a strong showing against Lakeview Academy.

It didn’t work out, as Lakeview trounced the Eagles 9-2.

The Eagles will try to notch a win Thursday when they travel to Lexington for their first region game at 5 p.m.

Oglethorpe entered play on Tuesday still looking for its first win of the season.

The 2008 year offered a lot of ups and downs for the local teams as Commerce and East Jackson high school athletes competed on the fields, tracks, mats and courts.

Tiger and Eagle fans, athletes and parents have a number of memories from the year that will live in the clippings and trophies demonstrating the accomplishments of student athletes from both schools.
