Time is getting tight for the defending 8-AA champion Jefferson Dragons as they continue to prepare to defend their title.

With the August 28 season opener now just a little over a week away, the Dragon Nation is hoping to see a continuation of their dominance over in-county rival Commerce.

This year marks the second season that the Dragons and Tigers have opened their seasons against each other. Last year, it was the Dragons who came away victorious, recording their second straight win over Commerce. [Full Story »]

The countdown is on to a new season for the defending region 8-AA champion Jefferson Dragons.

With just over two weeks before kickoff against their archrivals, the Commerce Tigers, new head football coach T. McFerrin said he’s seeing progress with his team.

“It’s been a slow process, and I think football coaches by nature are just impatient,” he said this week. “You want things to fall in place right away, and it doesn’t happen that way, especially when you’re coming in and there’s a change.” [Full Story »]

Saturday marked the official beginning of football practice around the state of Georgia.

For the Jefferson Dragons, it marked the beginning of a new era for the 2008 8-AA region champs.

That’s because this season, the Dragons will work under the leadership of head coach T. McFerrin, a winner of over 300 high school football games as a coach. [Full Story »]

As far as impressive streaks are concerned, no athletic program in Northeast Georgia has been on a run like the Jefferson High School wrestling team.

Since 2001, the Dragons have reeled off nine consecutive traditional state titles and eight straight duals championships, giving the program 17 state titles in a nine-year span.

The nearly decade-long dominance has not gone unnoticed, and the Northeast Georgia Sports Hall of Fame has named the Dragons “Northeast Georgia’s Most Dominating Team.” [Full Story »] 

Jefferson 13U All- Stars win state title

The Jefferson 13-year-old All Stars won the Dizzy Dean State Baseball Tournament in convincing fashion Tuesday night with a 17-2 demolition of Druid Hills. The game was called after 5 innings due to the 10 run mercy rule much to the delight of a packed house at the Jefferson Recreation Complex. This was Jefferson’s first State Baseball Title since 2002.

The Jefferson Parks and Recreation Department hosted the 5 day Tournament that featured 15 teams from all six Dizzy Dean districts.

Recreation Dept. Director Colt Green and Athletic Director Jeremy Smith were both very pleased with the attendance and support of all the parents from across the state. [Full Story »] 

Jefferson’s Beck drafted by Cleveland Indians

Thursday was a big day for Jefferson High School graduate Chris Beck.

That was the day the Major Leagues came knocking.

The Cleveland Indians drafted Beck in the 35th round, pick number 1,055 of the draft. [Full Story »] 

Two Dragons make All-Star starts

Jefferson High School head baseball coach Tommy Knight, along with two JHS players, took part in the recent round-robin tournament that made up the 2009 All-Star games last week.

Knight was tabbed by the Atlanta Dugout Club to coach the North Georgia All-Stars, while Chris Beck and Chris Swancey were chosen to play.

The first two games were held at Kennesaw State University, while the last three were held in Statesboro.

Jefferson continues spring practice this week

With the first full week of spring practice behind them, the Jefferson Dragons will wrap up practice in pads this week as they continue to work towards the fall and an August 28 season opener.

JHS head football coach T. McFerrin says the team continues to work to get things in place.

“We’re still installing,” he said. “We haven’t put our whole offense in, and certainly not our whole defense. I think we have been able to evaluate the players a little bit. We’re trying to get them in the right positions and learn about the players a little bit. [Full Story »] 

Dragons’ season ends with loss to Titans

The Jefferson Dragons saw their post-season drive come to an end last Wednesday, as they fell to the Titans of Blessed Trinity in a two-game sweep.

The Titans would go on to face Cook in the quarterfinals this week.

The Dragons ended their season as the Region 8-AA champions with a 15-1 region record. Their overall record for 2009 was 22-5. [Full Story »]

The Jefferson Dragons saw their season come to a close Wednesday night, as they were swept in post-season action by the Titans of Blessed Trinity.

The Titans won the first game of the doubleheader 10-8, and the second 2-0.

The Dragons end their season as the 8-AA champs, with a 22-5 overall record.
