The Winder-Barrow High School football team will look to regroup and get into the win column when the Bulldoggs travel to Salem High School this Friday.

WBHS took one on the chin for the second week in a row last Friday, falling to Gainesville 69-0 at W. Clair Harris Stadium. It was the first home game of 2012 for the Bulldoggs.

The WBHS team will be on the road for the third time in four contests this week as it makes the trek to Conyers to battle the Salem Seminoles. [Full Story »] 

When David Wagner studies film of the Monroe Area High School football team, one thing jumps out immediately: speed.

The Purple Hurricanes, who ran past county rival Loganville 50-7 last week, are loaded with team speed, Wagner said.

“They are as fast overall as a team I have seen in a while,” Wagner said Monday. “They have five backs, including the quarterback, who can just fly. It is pure speed. They also have the linemen in front of them who can block. They are as good of a Monroe Area team I have seen since I’ve been coaching in Georgia. They are very talented at all the positions.” [Full Story »] 

The Winder-Barrow High School football team had opportunities Friday night but were unable to stop the program's losing streak which now stands at 25 games.

The Bulldoggs fell 21-10 to Jackson County Comprehensive High School at Panther Stadium in Jefferson. WBHS (0-1) rallied from a 7-0 halftime deficit to lead by three points after the third quarter on a 40-yard field by Colin Shannon and a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Christian Hodge.

The host Panthers would answer, however, on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Daniel to Ben Brissey with 8:18 left to regain the lead. That score was set up by a Winder-Barrow fumble deep in its own territory. [Full Story »] 

At some point, football teams — at any level — have to take the field for a game that counts.

David Wagner understands this as much as any coach. The Winder-Barrow High School mentor, who is entering his third year with the Bulldoggs, will lead his team against Jackson County Comprehensive High School on the road Friday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

“I believe we are ready,” Wagner said. “We still have a couple of injuries we hope to sort out by Friday. We are at the point though where we need to see if all our work has paid off. You put in so much time getting ready. I’m not sure any high school coach is ever 100 percent ready for the first game, but at some point you have to take that step onto the field.” [Full Story »] 

With a long offseason no doubt weighing on them, the Winder-Barrow High School Bulldoggs will get an opportunity to do something different this week.

The WBHS football team will scrimmage South Forsyth and get the chance to face someone other than itself. For coach David Wagner, who is entering his third season with the Bulldoggs, Friday’s scrimmage will be used for a variety of purposes including a look at the new offensive and defensive schemes. With the clock ticking louder in terms of its final countdown to the 2012 season, Winder-Barrow High School football coach David Wagner knows time is more essential now than ever.

Summer workouts continued through June including participation in a passing league at Jefferson High School.

“You can throw and do all you want in practice, but it changes when you go against actual competition,” Wagner said. [Full Story »] 

The summer program for the Winder-Barrow High School football team will continue to focus on a variety of things.

The Bulldoggs will continue installing their new offensive and defensive schemes. Head coach David Wagner is moving from a Wing-T offense to more of a triple option attack. Wagner said recently he believes that will help the offense take full advantage of its strengths.

New defensive coordinator Stanley Allen is seeing progress on the other side of the football as well. Allen, who has been with the Bulldogg program since Wagner arrived prior to the 2010 season, is teaching his 4-4 scheme, which he has used for many years at various schools. [Full Story »] 

The Winder-Barrow High School football team concluded spring practice last Wednesday with a controlled scrimmage, although there was plenty of contact on the field.

“Our players got after it,” Bulldogg coach David Wagner said. “It was very physical, especially with our older players.”

Wagner, who is entering his third season at WBHS, compared spring drills to a “crash course” in terms of installing the revamped offense and new defense. The Bulldoggs are moving to a triple option attack as well as a new defensive scheme under coordinator Stanley Allen. [Full Story »] 

When one looks beyond the scoreboard, there have been improvements for the Winder-Barrow High School football team during the two years of the David Wagner era.

However, Wagner knows most people only see one statistic and that is the number of wins. With that in mind, perhaps, Wagner and his coaching staff are retooling some things for the upcoming 2012 season. A new defensive scheme with a new defensive coordinator, along with a new offensive setup are highlighting the changes this spring as the Bulldoggs have returned to the practice field.

“We have had some productive days to this point,” Wagner said. “The players are working hard and responding to what we are doing. The past few days have been solid ones for our football program.” [Full Story »]
