For those of you with an impatient nature, (I count myself as one of those) I’m sure you wondered if this week would ever arrive.

Well, it has. The Banks County High School football team will take to the field this Friday night for a game that counts in the standings. It’s here folks. It’s time to put the football on the kicking tee and see what happens.

After weeks, months even, of offseason work by coach Blair Armstrong’s team, it all begins for real this Friday night. The Leopards will venture to Washington-Wilkes to see what the early stages of the 2008 campaign has in store. [Full Story »]

Welcome sports fans to a brand new season of watching young men beat the snot out each other, and we have football!
Yes, it is the beginning of another year of high school football.

All kidding aside, I am glad it is football season because it means that the fans are coming.
I know a lot of people get worked up for their team of choice every year and I do not have a problem with that. In fact, I wish more people could come out and support the local teams, but that is not the point of this particular column.

I recently had a chance to catch up with a friend of mine who is “not from around these parts” as some would say, and as I explained that I am covering high school sports for a community newspaper, my friend said something that made a lot of sense.

Column: Legendary Southern 500 Rises Again

Traditional race fans got a pleasant surprise last Thursday morning when the announcement was made that the Southern 500 would be returning to the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule, in name at least, at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina in 2009.

The Southern 500 was one of the races that helped build NASCAR into what it is today. But a desire to cash in on a supposed goldmine of fans in California (that has since failed to materialize) saw Darlington’s traditional date go to the California Speedway in 2003. The Southern 500 event itself, after a one-year run in November, was done away with in 2005.

Community support vital for success

It’s common sense when you think about it.
High school athletic programs must have community support to thrive and be successful. Think about it, you don’t see too many winning programs without it. Come to think about it, you don’t see any that I know of.

That’s why the scene at the Banks County High School football stadium last Friday night — for a preseason scrimmage no less — was so great to see. As the start of the scrimmage against Johnson High School arrived, the crowd on the home side of the stadium was indeed a sight to behold.

One long-time Leopard fan said there have been plenty of regular season games where the stands were not as full. It was great to see the support and enthusiasm of those who took the time to come to support the players and coaches. After the work they have put in during the offseason they certainly deserve it. Tony Stewart recently made the announcement that his racecar next year, as part of his buy-in to the current Haas-CNC team, will be number 14.

The reason Tony went with this number was his connection to one of his racing heroes, legendary racer A.J. Foyt.

What can a team of constant losers do to break a losing tradition?

What about getting pulled out of bed, in the middle of the night onto a dew-laden field to practice football.

After reading several of the reports and opinions about Saturday’s Nationwide series race in Montreal, which was run as a steady rain fell, one supposed “fact” was stated several times.

The offending item was the notion that Saturday’s event was the first ever NASCAR race run in the rain.

What words can one offer in times of tragedy that really make a difference? Are there any words that can really ease the type of pain felt by those in Banks County Saturday night when the news was delivered that a son, grandson, brother, family member was no longer with us.

I’m not one who can begin to offer any words of encouragement during times like this. I’ve always felt the job is best left to those of faith or leaders in our schools or those who have some experience when it comes to counseling or crisis matters.
All I know is that a young person who had so much potential, so much to offer, so much support from the community is no longer with us. In addition, two of his friends and football teammates were injured in the accident. We are indeed fortunate they weren’t taken from us although the pain we all feel today is still cutting because a funeral was held Monday morning when it was the last thing we expected.
