No football coach is on the hot seat more than New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin.

It seems like every year the man is in danger of losing his job, but somehow he is kept in place just long enough for his team to make another run.

When the Giants beat the Patriots in 2008, Coughlin almost got fired in the middle of the season. And even the next season, he was back on the hot seat. [Full Story »]

This edition will reach the newsstands on the first day of February. However, I’m already in a spring state of mind.

Perhaps it’s the better-than-usual weather we’ve enjoyed in recent days. Despite some chilly mornings, the afternoons have been quite enjoyable, especially for January. This past Saturday in fact, I was able to spend most of the day outside, getting an early jump on yard work, which usually does not begin until spring. [Full Story »]

This week we lost one of the most iconic figures in sports history, Joe Paterno.

Paterno, 85, passed away after a fight with lung cancer. In November, the long time coach of the Nittany Lions was fired in wake of a detrimental scandal. It was a scandal that cost Paterno his job, but will not cost him his legacy.

Say what you want about Paterno not doing “enough” when he first heard about the scandal, the fact remains that Paterno did exactly what he was supposed to do. He later admitted that he should have done more and that he wishes he would have done more. But that is a mistake, let’s not pretend that we don’t make mistakes daily ourselves. [Full Story »]

It’s funny how the hands of time turn. It seems like only yesterday when I first arrived in Winder.

In 1997, I lived for a while across from the Austin family. Jason Austin had been tearing it up on the football field and in other sports for Winder-Barrow High School. Now off to Memphis to play football at the collegiate level, Austin had already left a strong mark for his high school alma mater.

I learned a lot about Jason in my early days in Winder from those who knew him best — his family. Talks with my neighbors were frequent and it was entertaining hearing about all of Jason’s accomplishments. [Full Story »]

Last season the Green Bay Packers came into Atlanta for a divisional round matchup against a Falcons team that came into the game 13-3 and coming off a first round bye.

The Falcons were the No. 1 seed and the wild card Packers came into the dome and schooled the league’s most dominant team.

This year the Packers felt the disappointment that the Falcons felt last year when they lost this past Sunday to the New York Giants. [Full Story »]

Going to Apalachee High School basketball games is always a treat because you get to see Kevin Morris in action.

Morris, head coach of the Wildcats, is probably as intense of a coach I have seen on the basketball court. Every possession, every attempt, every foul, every minute of the game are seemingly life and death to the AHS coach. He’s the type of coach I have to believe would have to be fun to play for. You would be hard pressed to keep up with how many times a game Morris questions a call by officials. As a player, I would love the fact my coach constantly stuck up for me in that manner. BRIDGES: National title game was only mythical one

They played a game Monday night that was, in theory, for the national championship in major college football.

The game was played, millions watched and certain people tried to convince us all is right with a broken system of determining a champion. Only in major college football is this fraud of a system forced upon the fans and to some degree, it’s actually the fault of those fans.

LSU and Alabama played for it all Monday night although I did not watch one play of it. I purposely stayed away in my own form of protest since this way of determining a national champion is such a farce. [Full Story »]

The Miami Heat were in a giving mood on Christmas, dropping into the American Airlines Center and giving the Dallas Mavericks a holly-jolly beat down on the day that they raised their banner from last year’s NBA Finals.

The final score saw the Heat atop 105-94, but this was not an 11-point game.

Miami was up by as much as 35 during the contest, while leading by 15 points after the first quarter and taking a 21-point lead into half time. [Full Story »]

It’s hard to believe another year has slipped by.

Within a few days 2011 will be in the rear-view mirror. It seems like only yesterday we were ringing in the new year with plenty of hopes and dreams. Now it’s all but behind us as we look to what 2012 will bring.
