5:25 p.m. It’s more than two hours before kickoff. The coolness of the November air can be felt by all those standing outside the Apalachee High School locker room.

Coaches and trainers talk about how cold it seems even though the sun is not down. Additional layers of clothing are being put on. There doesn’t seem to be a fake sense of macho in the group. Everyone seems to realize it’s going to be cold as the Wildcat team prepares to battle for the playoffs. [Full Story »]

It’s been a little more than a year now since the Apalachee High School football team made the short trip to Loganville for a Region 8-AAAA contest.

Going into the game, there was plenty on the line. The Wildcats were looking to defend their state ranking and undefeated record. The LHS Red Devils were hoping to stay in the playoff chase and show it could compete with the elite in the region. [Full Story »]

Most — if not all — of the offseason talk centered on Apalachee High School and Winder-Barrow High School football was of how David Wagner went from being the Wildcat defensive coordinator to the Bulldogg head coach.

While there’s no denying that was big news in these parts, another coaching change between the schools was also important in many ways. Long-time WBHS assistant Jeff Maddox went from wearing the Bulldogg colors to the Wildcat ones. This Friday, Maddox will once again take part in the Battle of Barrow County, only this time from the AHS point of view. It will be something different for the veteran coach. [Full Story »]

The loss to Clarke Central last Friday was no doubt disappointing for Apalachee High School and Wildcat head coach Shane Davis.

For it’s Davis who puts a premium on being prepared for all phases of a contest, regardless of the opponent. When you face a foe the quality of the Gladiators, however, it takes almost a perfect effort to record a win. AHS was unable to do that against the No. 2 team in all of AAAA last week, thus ending the Wildcats’ chance at repeating as region champion. [Full Story »]

For Winder-Barrow High School football coach David Wagner, the first six games of the 2010 season have been something similar to a boat sailing in uncharted territory.

Wagner is not used to losing, regardless of where his coaching career has taken him. Most recently it has been a part of the Apalachee High School coaching staff as defensive coordinator for Shane Davis. [Full Story »]
