The Commerce golf team is taking it easy this week and enjoying spring break.

Before the teams were able to pack it up, Commerce played Banks County and Buford last week.

Last Tuesday, the Tigers’ hosted Banks County at Double Oaks. In an impressive round, the Lady Tigers won 100-123 over the Lady Leopards.

“This was one of our best scores,” said coach David Stephenson. “Our goal is to break 100. I think we will soon.”

Low scorer for the Lady Tigers was Chelsey Cain at 48. CJ Wilkes shot a 52 followed by Callie Adams with a 54 and Haley Chestnut with a 55. Anna Marie Hooper carded a 65.

The boys also defeated Banks County, 169-193.

Colton Dean was low medalist at 39 followed by Casey Drinkard with a 40. Austin Patterson shot a 42, Sam Purcell a 48, Brandon Coots a 49 and Andrew Minish a 56.

“Colton played really well and Casey was solid as usual,” said Stephenson.

The Commerce tennis team has had a run of bad luck in recent matches.

It started with a loss to Banks County on March 17, both teams fell to the Leopards. The boys were defeated 3-2 as the girls were swept 5-0.

“I thought we played hard but had too many unforced errors,” said tennis coach Chad Bridges.

Then at Lakeview Academy on March 19, both the girls and boys dropped the region match. [Full Story »] 

Commerce High School’s golfers were out on the greens again last week, taking wins over East Jackson’s golfers.

This week the boys and girls teams hosted Hebron Christian on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.

Coming up for the Tiger golfers, the boys will play at Jennings Mill on Thursday with Cedar Shoals. On Saturday, the boys will be at Double Oaks competing in the Madison County tournament.

Commerce tennis teams have a tough match ahead against Lakeview.

Lakeview is the fourth opponent the Commerce tennis teams have met on the court.

Commerce played Banks County, Tuesday, in Homer. Results from the match were unavailable at press time.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers will face Lakeview tomorrow (Thursday) on the road at 4:00 p.m.

Coach Chad Bridges said that Lakeview will be tough as the teams are one of the best.

Next Monday, Commerce faces Tallulah Falls in the second match up between the schools. The match starts at 4:00 p.m. at Tallulah Falls.

Commerce’s track and field teams finished third last week in a tri-meet with Jefferson and Oglethorpe County.

Coming up for the track Tigers are Athens Academy and North Oconee.

Commerce will head to Athens Academy tomorrow (Thursday) in a dual competition starting at 4:00 p.m.

Next Tuesday, March 24, the Track Tigers face Athens Academy again as a part of a tri-meet with North Oconee at 4:30 at North Oconee.

Last week Commerce’s boys’ and girls’ teams finished third against Jefferson and Oglethorpe.

The Jefferson boys won first with 71.5 points followed by Oglethorpe with 66.5 and Commerce with 32. Jefferson’s girls also took first with 106.5 points while Oglethorpe scored 56 and Commerce 6.5 points.

Commerce’s track and field seasons got under way on Saturday as the boys and girls teams competed at the Eagle Invitational hosted by East Jackson.

The Tigers finished in fifth place behind Oglethorpe, Habersham, Banks and East Jackson. The Lady Tigers finished seventh ahead of Banks and trailing Dawson, Oglethorpe, Habersham, East Jackson, Jackson County and Rabun.

With Saturday being the first competition for Commerce and several athletes coming in from winter sports, girls’ coach Pam Canup said she was pleased with the effort.

“[The teams] came out and did a good job. We are not in track shape yet, but we are getting there,” said Canup. “Overall, we found out some things we needed to find out.”

Both teams will head to Jefferson today (Wednesday) to compete. The meet starts at 4:00 p.m.
