Commerce’s golfers will head to Hard Labor Creek tomorrow (Thursday) as the boys and girls golf teams take on Social Circle.

Next week, Commerce will be at its home course, Double Oaks, playing against Cedar Shoals and East Jackson.

Monday’s round against Banks County at Hammer’s Glen was canceled. The teams are scheduled to play March 31 at Double Oaks.

Commerce’s Tiger golfers started what they hope will turn out to be a good season last Thursday against Jackson County.

Although they finished seven shots behind Jackson County — shooting a 207 to the Panthers’ 200 — Commerce has high hopes for the season.

While the weather conditions canceled Monday’s match against Oglethorpe, the Commerce golfers will head to Homer next Monday to play Banks County. Both the boys and girls will face Banks at Hammer’s Glen.

CHS Finish Fourth At State

Commerce High School’s mat Tigers placed six wrestlers inside the top four at the state tournament and placed fourth as a team.

Commerce finished fourth with 83 points. Bremen won the crown with 176.5 points and five state champions. Wesleyan finished second with 138 points, Gordon Lee was third with 119 and Bowdon placed fifth with 76 points.

The Tigers bounced back after a rough night on Friday to place six inside the top four on Saturday.

Mat Tigers Sending 11 To Gwinnett Arena

The Commerce grapplers made a good showing at the Traditional Area Tournament, missing the area championship by just a half a point.

Commerce finished with 238 points just behind Wesleyan with 238.5 points.

Last weekend the Mat Tigers qualified 11 wrestlers to go to the State Tournament this weekend at the Gwinnett Arena. [Full Story »] 

Lady Tigers Face Social Circle

After a rough season, the Commerce Lady Tigers will enter the region tournament.

The Lady Tigers ended the regular season with two losses that left the team 5-11 in region play and 6-16 overall. The record secured the seventh seed in the region tournament.

CHS Splits Games, Faces Social Circle At Tourney

The Commerce High School Tigers ended an era last Friday night.

The final game of the regular season also marked the end of the CHS gymnasium.

The gym is slated to be demolished this spring to make room for the new high school. A future practice gymnasium almost completed will serve as the temporary home for the Tigers during next season. A new pit-style basketball facility will be constructed as part of the new high school.

The seventh seed Lady Tigers play this afternoon (Tuesday) at 4:00 p.m. against number two seed Social Circle at Lakeview Academy.

Commerce's boys as the number four seed, face fifth seed Social Circle on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., also at Lakeview Academy.

Lady Tigers Down But Not Out

It is not over yet.

That is the sentiment of the Commerce Lady Tigers, as the team prepares for the final game of the regular season against visiting Athens Christian.

While the Lady Tigers hope to end the season on a high note, the odds don’t look good.

Athens Christian defeated Commerce earlier in the season 40-14. But coach Eddie McCurley said that teams are more evenly matched than the numbers indicate.

“We want to compete and play well,” McCurley said. “They are very physical but we feel we match up better. There should not be any quit in anybody. It is just not in our vocabulary.”

Friday’s game will provide the Lady Tigers with a shot at the sixth seed in the region tourney.

“We have to fight the whole way to the finish,” said McCurley. “You get in the tournament and you don’t know what is going to happen.”

Regardless of what lies ahead of Commerce in the region tournament, the ladies have to make it through Friday. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m.

CHS Down To Final Game In The Season

The end of the regular season is in sight for the Commerce Tigers.

With one game left, and a solid hold on the fourth seed for the region tournament, Commerce only has Athens Christian at home on Friday night to contend with before the region tournament.

Friday is Senior Night, and according to coach Chad Bridges, the Tigers will have their work cut out for them against Athens Christian.

“It is Senior Night and you never know what to expect,” said Bridges. “Athens Christian is the best team in the region and they have not been beat, so we will have our work cut out for us.”

Tip-off is at 8:30 p.m.

Commerce Ready For Area Tourney

The Commerce mat Tigers have had a few days to rest and work on some final practice before heading to the traditional area tournament Friday and Saturday.

Social Circle will host the traditional area tournament, which determines how many of the mat Tigers will make the trip to state.

On Friday the matches start at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, the tournament continues at 9:00 a.m.

While the grapplers will attempt to qualify all 14 wrestlers, coach Kendall Love said Commerce has several grapplers favored to win.
