Tigers To ‘Put On Good Show’ At Jefferson Fri.

The football season kicks off this Friday as the Commerce Tigers head across the river to take on long-standing rival Jefferson.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in what has been dubbed The River War.

The history between the two teams stretches back over six decades and follows a number of ups and downs for both sides, according to Tiger historian Jeff Prickett, who maintains a running history of the team available at www.commercetigers.com. [Full Story »]

Commerce’s Lady Tigers are one week into the softball season and are 2-2 after opening at Banks County last Tuesday and hosting the Commerce Invitational over the weekend.

Looking to this week, the Lady Tigers are on the road, playing Hart County today (Wednesday) before heading over to Jefferson on Thursday.

This weekend, the Commerce club will compete in the Towns County/Young Harris Invitational before returning to host Towns County on Sept. 1. [Full Story »]

Results from the Commerce Lady Tigers softball season opener Tuesday afternoon at Banks County were unavailable at press time, but Coach Pam Canup said she’d use the game to firm up her lineup before the Commerce Invitational Tournament this weekend.

The Lady Tigers will host Towns County, Banks County, Athens Christian, East Hall and Gainesville for the tourney which starts at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial Park.

By then, based on Tuesday’s game in Homer, Canup hoped to solidify her outfield.

“We are replacing the whole outfield, and figuring out exactly who is where and who the backup is,” said Canup. “We have some good speed and have been working on some base-running.”

Commerce Cross Country Ready To Start, Sept. 10

With only three weeks left before the Commerce 2009 cross country schedule gets under way, coach Mark Hale is excited about the first few weeks of practice.

He’s particularly curious about how his girls’ squad will do.

The Lady Tiger are starting from scratch. They have no runners returning from 2008, but Hale said that a number of newcomers have come out for the team.

There are only two weeks separating the Commerce Tigers from the start of another football season.

The Tigers have already completed their first week of practice in helmets and pads and, according to head coach Steve Savage, the players have demonstrated dedication in practice.

“I think our attention to detail has been real good and we have shown good enthusiasm,” Savage said. “We have gone hard in long practice sessions. We have been going a lot longer, three to three-and-half hours, and our kids have done well with it.” [Full Story »]

While the Commerce gridiron Tigers prepare to hit the field, the sidelines are also getting in order as the Commerce cheerleaders are preparing for another season.

During football games the cheerleaders will encourage the team and the fans, but the cheerleaders also have competitions of their own.
The competitive cheerleading squad is made up of 20 JV and varsity football cheerleaders. Last year, the Commerce squad finished as the state runner-up in Class A.

The goals for this year are to improve the team’s stunting and tumbling performances.

Coach Pam Canup’s Lady Tigers are just over a week away from starting another softball season.

Commerce’s varsity Lady Tigers kick into gear with a preseason scrimmage at Hart County Tuesday, Aug 11, at 5:30 p.m. Their first game is the following Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 4:15 p.m. in Homer against the Banks County Lady Leopards. Both the varsity and the junior varsity girls will start the season at Banks County.

Last season the Lady Tigers picked up 10 wins and dropped 14 games while making it into the second consolation round of the state playoffs. [Full Story »]

Another summer swim season ends on a high note for the Commerce Tiger Sharks. They brought home state titles in three events from Saturday’s meet in Tifton.

Commerce took 22 swimmers to south Georgia to compete in the Georgia Recreation and Park Association State meet. Of those, 20 swimmers qualified to compete in the finals, with five swimmers coming out of the pool with state champion medals.

Kate Massey won the individual medley with a 1:37.59 finish that was three seconds faster than her preliminary time. [Full Story »]

Commerce’s Tiger Sharks are in the final stretch before the trip to the state swim meet this weekend.

Twenty-two swimmers will travel to Tifton for the state championships on Friday and Saturday. The meet will also signal the end of the swim season for the Tiger Sharks.

Commerce took in some final preparation last week as the team sent 28 swimmers to compete in the North Georgia Swim League Championships in Gainesville. [Full Story »]

After finishing as the runner-up in last weekend's state tournament the Commerce 14-and-under girls' softball team has its eyes set on Mississippi. The Dizzy Dean National Tournament will begin July 22 in Southaven, MS, with the championship game scheduled July 25.

The all-star girls advanced to the national level after last week's state tournament where the team came back through the losers' bracket to challenge the almost undefeated Fannin County team. Starting the tourney on Friday by bumping Dawson County into the losers bracket, the Commerce ladies joined them after losing their next game to host Fannin County.

In the losers' bracket Commerce defeated Dawson again to advance to play Jackson County in a nine-inning game where Commerce would come out on top 5-4. On Sunday, the girls defeated Fannin in the first game of the championship round, 11-7, but Fannin County rebounded and won the title in a 14-11 slugfest.

Members of the team are Drea Mathis, Alexis Knox, Jessika Kyle, Brooke Vickery, Kayla Burks, Kayla Knox, Heather Tyson, Hannah Crumley, Shana Sheridian and Emily Gonzalez. Coaches are Mike Vickery, Charles Kyle and Scott Andrews.
