Commerce’s gridiron Tigers tackled spring football practice this week and last, as the team worked on drills and started conditioning for the hard Friday nights coming up in just under 15 weeks.

Commerce is coming off a 5-5 regular season that saw four region wins and the Tigers finishing as third in 8-A. Commerce was eliminated in the opening round of the Class A playoffs by Wilkinson County, 21-7.

The Tigers will wrap up practice this week and then await the return to the field in August in preparation for the highly anticipated season opener against Jefferson. [Full Story »] 

Lady Tigers Pushed Out At State Meet

The Lady Tigers were disappointed in Albany over the weekend as stiff competition from rival class A schools edged the Commerce athletes out of the finals.

Sa’quavia Varnum, Erica Greene, Shekia Moon, Alexis Knox, Haiden Nunn and Drea Mathis represented the Lady Tigers at the state track meet.

Overall, Wesleyan garnered 83 points to win Class A. Darlington (51) followed Wesleyan as Our Lady of Mercy (50), Athens Christian (46) and Turner County (43) rounded out the top five.

CHS Tigers Ready To Head to Region

The Commerce Tigers are gearing up for this weekend’s region track meet in Watkinsville.

Athens Academy is hosting the Region 8-A meet that begins Saturday.

Last Saturday the Tigers were at the third annual Gary Matthews Invitational at Oglethorpe. Commerce took third place with 72 points behind first place Oglethorpe (120) and second place East Jackson (119).

Placing for the Tigers in the meet were Jovan Womack and Damian Wood. Womack (11.03 and 22.62) took first and Wood (11.22 and 22.85) took second in the 100m and 200m dash.

Zach Scannell placed third in the 300m hurdles.

Torrance Wilcher took second in both the long jump and the triple jump.

In the 4x100m relay the Commerce A team won the event with a final time of 44.84, the B team placed sixth in the same event. The A team in the 4x400m relay tied with East Jackson’s B team for fourth place at 3:50.00.

Lady Tiger Golfers Win Region Championship

Commerce’s Lady Tiger golfers will advance to state after taking the region championship Monday.

The Lady Tigers shot a 201, beating second-place Hebron by 22 strokes.

They’ll travel to Bartram Trail Golf Course in Evans, near Augusta, on May 4 for the state meet. [Full Story »] 

Diamond Tigers Prepare For Doubleheader Thursday

The Commerce baseball Tigers picked up two wins last week.

Commerce defeated Social Circle on Tuesday and Towns County Thursday.

This week, Commerce will host a doubleheader against region opponent Tallulah Falls starting at 4:30 p.m., Thursday afternoon.

Tallulah Falls has yet to pick up a region win and is 2-8 overall while Commerce is 12-6 overall and 9-1 in region play.

Then, on Friday, April 24, the Tigers will be on the road facing Lakeview Academy at 4:30. Lakeview is undefeated in the region and has beaten Commerce in the last four contests.

Commerce prevailed Tuesday against Social Circle with a 13-2 win in five innings.

Diamond Tigers Are Number Two In The Region

After defeating Athens Academy and Prince Avenue, last week the Commerce baseball Tigers are sitting comfortably in the number two spot in 8-A, just behind Lakeview Academy.

The Tigers are 7-1 in region play and 10-6 overall, with region opponent Town County coming up on Thursday.

Towns County (1-5; 3-9) will host Commerce April 16 at 5:30 at Young Harris College.

The Tigers have won the past seven meetings between the schools, including a 3-0 shutout in March. [Full Story »] 

CHS Golfers Prepare For Region

With only a few rounds scheduled before region tournament next Monday, the Commerce golf team hopes to build some confidence.

“You would like for them to have their confidence level high but really the only score that matters is the region score,” said golf coach David Stephenson.

The season has been frustrating for the team, with rain delaying several matches.

“This has been a tough year weather-wise to get any consistency since we have missed so much because of the weather conditions,” Stephenson said. “I hope we can get a good week of practice in and get to play both our matches.”

The golfers were scheduled to face Prince Avenue and Buford on Tuesday at Double Oaks before meeting Hebron at Pine Hills on Thursday.

Track Tigers Hit Rough Patch At Jefferson Relays

Commerce track Tigers had a rough outing Saturday at the Jefferson Relays.

Finishing seventh and eighth overall the Lady Tigers and Tigers nonetheless had a number of placers at the meet.

The track team was scheduled to compete at North Oconee Tuesday, but at press time information from the meet was unavailable.

Coming up for Commerce is a tri-meet at Habersham County and Tallulah Falls Monday at 4:00 p.m.

Diamond Tigers Play Jefferson Friday

While the rest of the school is enjoying spring break, the diamond Tigers are playing a three-game schedule.

Yesterday, (Tuesday) the Tigers met region opponent Athens Academy on the road. Results from Tuesday were not available at press time.

Coming up on Thursday, Commerce hosts Prince Avenue at 5:30 p.m.

Commerce’s Friday game against Hebron was rescheduled to April 27, due to the Good Friday holiday.

On Saturday, Commerce plays a 1:30 game in Jefferson, where they hope to avenge a 12-7 loss to the Dragons earlier this year. Jefferson is 10-2 overall.

Leading up to this week, Commerce dropped a 9-4 decision game to Lakeview Academy last Tuesday, then came back with a 1-0 win over Athens Christian on Friday.

CHS Golfers Take Week Off For Spring Break

The Commerce golf team is taking it easy this week and enjoying spring break.

Before the teams were able to pack it up, Commerce played Banks County and Buford last week.

Last Tuesday, the Tigers’ hosted Banks County at Double Oaks. In an impressive round, the Lady Tigers won 100-123 over the Lady Leopards.

“This was one of our best scores,” said coach David Stephenson. “Our goal is to break 100. I think we will soon.”

Low scorer for the Lady Tigers was Chelsey Cain at 48. CJ Wilkes shot a 52 followed by Callie Adams with a 54 and Haley Chestnut with a 55. Anna Marie Hooper carded a 65.

The boys also defeated Banks County, 169-193.

Colton Dean was low medalist at 39 followed by Casey Drinkard with a 40. Austin Patterson shot a 42, Sam Purcell a 48, Brandon Coots a 49 and Andrew Minish a 56.

“Colton played really well and Casey was solid as usual,” said Stephenson.
