The Commerce Tigers are gearing up for this weekend’s region track meet in Watkinsville.

Athens Academy is hosting the Region 8-A meet that begins Saturday.

Last Saturday the Tigers were at the third annual Gary Matthews Invitational at Oglethorpe. Commerce took third place with 72 points behind first place Oglethorpe (120) and second place East Jackson (119).

Placing for the Tigers in the meet were Jovan Womack and Damian Wood. Womack (11.03 and 22.62) took first and Wood (11.22 and 22.85) took second in the 100m and 200m dash.

Zach Scannell placed third in the 300m hurdles.

Torrance Wilcher took second in both the long jump and the triple jump.

In the 4x100m relay the Commerce A team won the event with a final time of 44.84, the B team placed sixth in the same event. The A team in the 4x400m relay tied with East Jackson’s B team for fourth place at 3:50.00.

Commerce’s Lady Tiger golfers will advance to state after taking the region championship Monday.

The Lady Tigers shot a 201, beating second-place Hebron by 22 strokes.

They’ll travel to Bartram Trail Golf Course in Evans, near Augusta, on May 4 for the state meet. [Full Story »] 

After defeating Athens Academy and Prince Avenue, last week the Commerce baseball Tigers are sitting comfortably in the number two spot in 8-A, just behind Lakeview Academy.

The Tigers are 7-1 in region play and 10-6 overall, with region opponent Town County coming up on Thursday.

Towns County (1-5; 3-9) will host Commerce April 16 at 5:30 at Young Harris College.

The Tigers have won the past seven meetings between the schools, including a 3-0 shutout in March. [Full Story »] 

With only a few rounds scheduled before region tournament next Monday, the Commerce golf team hopes to build some confidence.

“You would like for them to have their confidence level high but really the only score that matters is the region score,” said golf coach David Stephenson.

The season has been frustrating for the team, with rain delaying several matches.

“This has been a tough year weather-wise to get any consistency since we have missed so much because of the weather conditions,” Stephenson said. “I hope we can get a good week of practice in and get to play both our matches.”

The golfers were scheduled to face Prince Avenue and Buford on Tuesday at Double Oaks before meeting Hebron at Pine Hills on Thursday.
