The Leopard matmen of Banks County High School continue their undefeated season this past week competing at home and on the road in the Morgan County Choo Choo Classic. The Leopards will return to Morgan County for a regular match up on December 11.

"Coming into this season, Coach Tyson Baxter, Coach Sam Baxter, Coach Nichols, Coach Crook and myself were all very excited,” head coach Kasey Hanley said. “Our goal as a staff has been to win a state championship for the past several years now. Our goal hasn't wavered. My high school coach, Coach Jack Keen of Jefferson, always taught his wrestlers to set their goals high. He said if your goal is first place and you fall just short, then you still finish with a medal. But if your goal is just to win a medal and you fall short, then you finish completely out of the medal round. The same can be said for the classroom, if your goal is an A and you barely miss your goal, then you still finish with a B or at least a C. If your goal is just to pass the class and you fall short, then you fail. That being said, our goal is to win a state championship."

Lady Leopards take win over East Jackson

After the JV teams completing a sweep , it was time for the varsity to have their turn at the gauntlet. The Lady Leopards did not disappoint and took a 61-38 victory over the Lady Eagles. The Lady Leopards have an over record of 2-1-0.

"We had a huge first quarter but East Jackson kept the other quarters close,” head coach Jerry King said. “We are young and will need to overcome inconsistency."

The Lady Leopards scored 21 points to the Eagles five in the first quarter of the game.

Six Lady Leopards contributed to the 21 points, Taylor Kennedy made close to half with 10 points, Lauren carter scored three points. Haley Warner, Kaitlyn Duncan, Savannah Blalock and Casey Turner scored two points each in the period.
BCHS stayed ahead in the second quarter 15-11 and led at the half 36-16 over the Lady Eagles. Kaitlyn Duncan scored six points, Abby Parks five points, Taylor Kennedy and Paige Mathis scored two points each to end the half. [Full Story »]

During the break the wrestling team hosted and won the Dennis Marlow Wrestling Tournament. There were 10 teams competing with Banks County defeating Oconee County in the championship round.

The Banks County High School Leopard basketball teams are ready to roar down the courts in the new season competing in 7-AAA. The new region assignment will bring new challenges for the teams and some stiff competition to the Leopard den.

"Our region will be very tough this year for the Lady Leopards,” head coach Kerry King said. “Buford, the state runner-up, has the second ranked player in the country. Fannin brings back almost their entire team. North Hall has a group that plays travel ball almost 12 months out of the year. Dawson County will be very good this year and White County has a great deal of players returning."

The Lady Leopards graduated five seniors from the squad, all of which got most of the playing time during last years season. The team is very young this year and they will need some young players to get some time in early so BCHS can have an impact late in the season. [Full Story »]

Middle school wrestlers take second in tourney

The Banks County Middle School Leopards competed this past Saturday in the toughest preseason tournament in the state, the Jr. Mountaineer Tournament in Dahlonega.

Team leaders say the team wrestled extremely well considering 75% of the roster has never wrestled in a middle school tournament.

BCMS placed second as a team behind Lumpkin County Middle School which has 36 eighth graders on their team. Schools in attendance were Banks, Jasper, White, Lumpkin, Towns, Franklin, Union, Habersham, Riverview, Dawson, Fannin, West Jackson and Pickens Counties.

Out of 16 weight classes, Banks County had eight in the top four. This is the 16th tournament in the last five years that Banks County Middle School has placed in the top three as a team. [Full Story »]

BCHS basketball scrimmage game planned Nov. 15

The Banks County High School Leopards basketball teams started team practices last week and will host a scrimmage game on November 15 at the Leopard Gym. The games will start against Elbert County at 6 p.m.

The first regular season game is scheduled at Commerce on November 17 starting at 4 p.m. The first regular season home game will be on December 1 against Habersham Central High School starting with the JV at 1 p.m.

Finishing with an undefeated season, the 10u Banks County All-stars played in the Jackson County 14u Fall League. They outscored their opponents by a combined score of 59-19 over the season.

Team members include: Jewels Cromer, Tybee Denton, Hannah Angel, Chelsea Lewallen, Amber Williams Kya Santiago, MaKayla Benfield, Vada Bowden, Megan Bowman, Sara Barrett and MaKayla Beccett.

The Banks County Leopards pulled out a last minute victory over the Fannin County Rebels in Blue Ridge Friday night with a two point conversion play. The Leopards 47-46 win finally puts a positive mark in the region column. BCHS remains in a four way tie at 1-3 in the region with East Hall, West Hall and Fannin County.

The Leopards are trying to stay positive in a difficult season as the coach told his players to enjoy the deserved victory over the Rebels Friday night at the mother's huddle at the end of the game.

Fannin County started the game with the first possession and took it 69 yards for the score. The PAT was no good and the Rebels led the Leopards 6-0 with 8:47 to play in the first quarter. [Full Story »]

Tryouts ahead for traveling basketball league

Tryouts for a 12 & under(6th grade) and 10 & under(5th & 4th grade) boys basketball travel teams will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m. at the recreation center.

Players can be cut from these teams but can still play recreation ball as long as they are registered.

The teams will play in Hall County vs. their Elite Rec. program teams. The fee will be announced at the tryouts.
Practices will be held at the Rec. Center. All games will be played in Hall County. Uniforms (jersey and shorts) will be furnished.

Lady Leopards to compete at State Softball Tournament

The Banks County High School Lady Leopard Softball Team will advance to the state softball tournament this week. BCHS won against White County 5-4 and lost to Fannin County 5-8 in the region tournament last week to advance.

The Lady Leopards scored two runs in the first inning and three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead from White County for the win.

Kaitlyn Stewart led the Lady Leopards with two at bats and two runs scored, Taylor Kennedy, Morgan Rylee and McKenna Rylee scored one run each. Haley Warner had three RBIs, Lindsey Elliott and Morgan Cox had one RBI each.

Savannah Denton pitched seven innings finishing the game with five hits , four runs, three earned runs, one walk and struck out two batters. Denton faced 32 batters and threw 63 strikes and 38 ball pitches.

Fannin took an early lead scoring one run in the first inning and a second run in the second inning. The Lady Leopards roared back to score four runs in the third inning and the lead was lost when Fannin scored four runs in the fourth inning and added two more in the fifth inning to take the win from BCHS.

Taylor Kennedy scored one run off two hits, McKenna Rylee scored a run, Brenna Parson scored two runs and Leia Rylee scored a run for the Leopards.

Mallory Parson pitched six innings allowing seven hits , eight runs, five earned runs, five walks and struck out one batter.
The Banks County Lady Leopards will take on Blessed Trinity on Wednesday, October 10, in Roswell. The games will be on the Blessed Trinity campus. This is the best of three game series. The first two games will be played at 2:30 p.m. and approximately 4:30 p.m. A third game will be played on Thursday if needed.
