Mimi Hill scored 19 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as the Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldoggs defeated county rival Apalachee 54-37 Friday night. Brittany Witt added 12 points for WBHS.

Kelsey Montgomery paced the Lady Wildcats with 17 points.

Coaches tend to downplay rival games but when it comes to the Winder-Barrow High School/Apalachee contest, the coaches involved know there really is no need to try.

Home was certainly sweet for the Apalachee High School wrestling team this past weekend.

Coach Jim Stoudenmire’s Mat Wildcats’ hosted a tournament and when all the action was complete found themselves with a second-place trophy trailing only Commerce in total points. [Full Story »] 

An 11-point win Saturday helped the Apalachee High School boys basketball team even their season record at 2-2.

Coach Kevin Morris’ squad took a 68-57 victory against Salem as Chaun Gresham poured in 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. John Ansley added 13 points and six assists.

New Apalachee High School wrestling coach Jim Stoudenmire knew his team would need some time to ease into the 2008-09 season.

With several young wrestlers on the roster, Stoudenmire realized it might took a few matches to get up to full speed. It appears, however, the Mat Wildcats are perhaps ahead of schedule at this point.

The excitement was evident in Michael Parks’ voice.

The Apalachee High School varsity girls basketball coach was more pleased that his team had recorded a win in its season opener against Commerce High School Saturday. The 51-41 win was only the second time in school history the Lady Wildcats have won their season opener.

It’s tough for any football season to end, but this one was especially tough for Apalachee High School head coach Shane Davis.
Having just completed his fourth season with the Wildcats, Davis has seen his first complete class go through his program. The players who are seniors now were freshman when Davis first became head coach prior to the 2005 season.

That’s why the head coach was so emotional in telling his players — and especially his seniors — thank you last Friday night after the state playoff contest against Rome.
