Any hopes the Apalachee High School baseball team had of upsetting region leader Gainesville Monday quickly evaporated.

The Wildcats fell 15-0 in five innings as the visiting Red Elephants scored five runs in the second inning and seven more in the third to quickly seize control.

Three additional runs in the top of the fifth kept Gainesville (21-3, 13-2) on track to claim the No. 1 spot from 8-AAAAA. [Full Story »] 

Apalachee High School’s baseball team will fall a little short of the postseason this spring.

Yet the Diamond Cats were so close to qualifying for the postseason for the first time in program history that coach Mike Cavey is probably asking himself “What if?” quite a bit.
Close losses in games against Heritage, Salem and Flowery Branch will likely keep AHS out of the region’s top four, but Cavey knows the team has battled some tough odds this spring.

“We have had to use some young players in key positions this season,” Cavey said after Friday’s game with Winder-Barrow High School. “We’ve had to make some adjustments this season and it hasn’t always been easy.” [Full Story »] 

The Apalachee High School baseball team earned a key region win Wednesday by defeating Flowery Branch 3-2 in eight innings.

Eric Morgan was 3-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and the game-winning RBI.

The Apalachee High School baseball team saw a chance for victory get away Tuesday.

The Wildcats fell to Heritage 6-5 and slipped to 1-1 in Region 8-AAAAA. For AHS coach Mike Cavey, whose team had defeated the Patriots 3-0 Friday, Tuesday’s rematch was not only disappointing but may have long-lasting implications as the season plays on.

“We really needed to be 6-0 in the region going into our series with Loganville,” Cavey said. “For us to finish in the top four of this region, that really needed to happen. Now, we without a doubt have to be 5-1 when we face Loganville. The disappointing thing is I felt like we gave Heritage the game tonight.” [Full Story »] 

The AHS Wildcats needed six innings to take care of business Tuesday afternoon as they defeated visiting Archer High School 14-4.

Eric Morgan recorded a grand slam, his first career home run, and finished with six RBI to help the Wildcats improved to 4-5 overall.

Chance Rodriguez worked four innings and allowed two earned runs while scattering seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

Tony Salvaggio finished with three hits and drove in two runs while Austin Miller had a hit and scored three runs with three RBI.

Apalachee was scheduled to play North Oconee Wednesday (today) at 5:55 p.m. in a makeup game from Monday.

The Apalachee High School baseball team opened the new season with a 12-0 victory against Central Gwinnett.

Mason Webb worked the first three innings, allowing just one run with three walks and four strikeouts. Justin Stevens pitched the fourth and fifth innings allowing three walks and striking out two.

Friday’s battle with Morgan County was only a scrimmage, but the Apalachee High School baseball team saw some positive signs which the Diamond Cats hope will continue during the 2013 regular season.

AHS rallied for a 6-5 win powered by three consecutive doubles in the bottom of the seventh. The Wildcats then took advantage of a defensive error by Morgan County to score the winning run.

“There wasn’t much to talk about early on but in the last inning our bats came alive,” said AHS coach Mike Cavey. [Full Story »] 

Last spring produced positive results for the Apalachee High School baseball team.

The Diamond Cats posted a program best 13 victories. AHS returns a solid nucleus from that team, but coach Mike Cavey knows wins won’t come easy this spring. The reason is simple. The Wildcats compete in Region 8-AAAAA, one of the toughest in the state, regardless of classifications.

“Our pitching staff will have to come up big,” Cavey said. “We will have to score a lot of runs as well. There is pressure to perform and do well when you compete in this region. It takes talent and hard-nosed players to succeed and win.” [Full Story »] 

All in all, the Apalachee High School summer baseball team is doing just fine for the month of June.

That was the assessment of coach Mike Cavey following the squad’s recent venture in the Brookwood Mid-Summer Classic which began last Friday and continued through Sunday.

“We’re going well,” Cavey said. “We faced some good pitching this weekend, but overall we are making strides for next season. I am pleased with what we have accomplished.” [Full Story »]
