The Apalachee High School football team will return to the field Tuesday as the countdown to the 2013 season begins in earnest.

The Wildcats, who will continue to compete in Region 8-AAAAA this fall, will have to replace several key players who will be lost to graduation.

“We probably lost more on both sides of the football as we have in a while,” said AHS head coach Shane Davis. “We have a lot of new faces we will need to look at this spring. “
The overall format for the Wildcats’ spring practice will remain the same.

“The pace of what we will be doing will probably be a little slower,” Davis said. “Still, our goal is to come out of spring with a depth chart.”
A spring scrimmage is tentatively set for Monday, May 13, although that may change. [Full Story »] 

Any hopes the Apalachee High School baseball team had of upsetting region leader Gainesville Monday quickly evaporated.

The Wildcats fell 15-0 in five innings as the visiting Red Elephants scored five runs in the second inning and seven more in the third to quickly seize control.

Three additional runs in the top of the fifth kept Gainesville (21-3, 13-2) on track to claim the No. 1 spot from 8-AAAAA. [Full Story »] 

The Apalachee High School golf teams are moving right along this spring.

Coach Kevin Morris has seen quality players from several competitors and the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats appear to be peaking at the right time. With the Region 8-AAAAA tournament on the horizon, the AHS teams are looking forward to the challenges they will face the remainder of the 2013 season.

Shelby Hanna continues to lead the Lady Wildcats. The defending region champion, Hanna is looking to repeat in that role this spring, although Morris said it the Lady Wildcats, as a whole, have a chance to qualify for state. [Full Story »] 

The Apalachee High School baseball team earned a key region win Wednesday by defeating Flowery Branch 3-2 in eight innings.

Eric Morgan was 3-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and the game-winning RBI.

Tyler Starnes pitched six innings giving up two runs in the first, but then pitched really well after that, coach Mike Cavey said. [Full Story »] 

Apalachee High School basketball player Cameron Blakely often stood above the competition on the court. Afterall, the senior stands 6-8.

Blakely's skills, however, have helped him be named to the All-Northeast Georgia basketball team for the 2012-2013 season. Blakely was the lone player from Barrow County named first team. He averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds his senior season and scored more than 1,000 points for his career.

AHS posted its first winning season since 2005 and advanced to the Class AAAAA state tournament. [Full Story »] 

The Apalachee High School Iron Cats take their weight lifting competitions seriously.

In winning their sixth state title in the past eight seasons, AHS once again powered its way past the competition during the March 16 event at Lambert High School.

“Our athletes look forward to the event and use it as a way to show what they have accomplished during our offseason work,” said AHS coach Shane Davis. “It really goes back to their work ethic and dedication to being successful at it.” [Full Story »] 

The coaching bug never really left Brian Moore.

Apalachee High School’s athletic director was able to scratch that itch by coaching his son in recreation play, but there’s an old adage when it comes to the coaching circle: “Preachers preach and coaches coach.” Moore, after several years as AHS athletic director, will return to the football sidelines this fall as an assistant coach at Jefferson High School. The Dragons are the defending Class AA state champions. He will also be the director of instructional technology for the Jefferson City School System.

“It was really about a desire to get back into coaching at the high school level,” Moore told the Barrow Journal. “It was not because of anything negative at Apalachee High School or in the Barrow County School System.” [Full Story »] 

The Apalachee High School baseball team saw a chance for victory get away Tuesday.

The Wildcats fell to Heritage 6-5 and slipped to 1-1 in Region 8-AAAAA. For AHS coach Mike Cavey, whose team had defeated the Patriots 3-0 Friday, Tuesday’s rematch was not only disappointing but may have long-lasting implications as the season plays on.

“We really needed to be 6-0 in the region going into our series with Loganville,” Cavey said. “For us to finish in the top four of this region, that really needed to happen. Now, we without a doubt have to be 5-1 when we face Loganville. The disappointing thing is I felt like we gave Heritage the game tonight.” [Full Story »]
