The excitement was evident in Michael Parks’ voice.

The Apalachee High School varsity girls basketball coach was more pleased that his team had recorded a win in its season opener against Commerce High School Saturday. The 51-41 win was only the second time in school history the Lady Wildcats have won their season opener.

It’s tough for any football season to end, but this one was especially tough for Apalachee High School head coach Shane Davis.
Having just completed his fourth season with the Wildcats, Davis has seen his first complete class go through his program. The players who are seniors now were freshman when Davis first became head coach prior to the 2005 season.

That’s why the head coach was so emotional in telling his players — and especially his seniors — thank you last Friday night after the state playoff contest against Rome.

Playing a long way from home, the Apalachee High School football team dropped a tough 16-8 contest to Rome in the opening-round of the Class AAAA state football playoffs Friday night.

The Wildcats trailed 16-0 at halftime but cut the Wolves' lead to one score in the second half. Apalachee had chances perhaps tie the contest but could not cross the Rome goal line again.

For the Apalachee High School football team, two words sum it all up: “playoff time.”

The Wildcats are still practicing this week after week 10 of the regular season. It’s the goal of every high school football team in the state. For the third consecutive season, coach Shane Davis’ team is among this elite group.

The Apalachee High School football team is once again preparing for the state playoffs following Week 10 of the regular season.

Coach Shane Davis' team defeated Salem 23-7 in Conyers last week and will meet Rome on the road Friday in the opening-round of the Class AAAA state playoffs this Friday night.

While last week’s victory against Madison County was important, it did not guarantee Apalachee High School a ticket to the Class AAAA state playoffs.

As Wildcat head coach Shane Davis put it, “It guaranteed us a play-in game.”

The Apalachee High School football team earned a win Friday night in what die-hard gridiron fans might have associated with an old Western Athletic Conference football game or perhaps a Canadian Football League contest.

Coach Shane Davis' team defeated visiting Madison County 55-35 on Senior Night to all but lock up a postseason berth. The Wildcats will travel to Salem in Conyers this week to close out the regular season.

Despite last week’s disappointing loss to Heritage, the playoffs remain a strong possibility for the Apalachee High School Wildcats.

Coach Shane Davis’ team is now 5-3 overall and will host Madison County in an important Region 8-AAAA contest this week. While the Red Raiders enter the game at 2-6, Davis said his team cannot overlook them. [ Full Story » ]
