The Bethlehem Christian Academy baseball team has not lost to a team in Class A this season.

On paper, however, the Knights (19-2) will face their toughest challenge within their own classificiaton in the GISA when they host defending state champion Crisp Academy beginning Friday in a best-of-three semifinal series. A doubleheader will begin Friday at 1:30 p.m. at BCA with a third game, if necessary, Saturday.

The Wildcats from Cordele entered state as the No. 2 seed from Region 3-A. Crisp Academy, ranked third in Class A, swept Westminster 15-0, and 14-0 in the quarterfinals last week.

“I think Bethlehem Christian is a fine team,” said Crisp Academy coach John Penney. “They are going to be tough. We look forward to the series. We have to show up and give it our best effort. We know we are going to face a quality opponent.”
Continue reading "Knights host defending champs in semifinals"

After four holes at the state golf tournament, Apalachee High School’s Shelby Hanna led the defending state champion by three strokes.

Hanna had stormed out of the starting gate at Bartram Trail Golf Course in Evans and had all those following her play take notice.

“My mind really starting racing then,” said AHS coach Kevin Morris. “It was something to see how well she doing.”
Continue reading "Hanna inches closer to ultimate golf goal"

No one has had a better start to the MLB season than Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton.

Hamilton has been absolutely crushing the ball this season, in 34 games Josh has hit 18 home runs, 44 RBIs, and has an average of .402.

Nothing short of incredible, in fact, Josh also showcased his talents in a game on May 8 when he hit four home runs against the Orioles — in just one game!
Continue reading "ROLLASON: The next chapter for Josh Hamilton"

The Bethlehem Christian Academy baseball team dipped its toe into playoff waters for the first time last week and when all was said and done, the temperature was just right.

The Knights improved to 19-2 overall by sweeping visiting Randolph Southern 11-1 in five innings and 5-0. The wins put BCA in the state semifinals against defending champion Crisp Academy this Friday.

“We had the best week of practice we’ve had all year,” said Knights coach Nick Pou. “We came out and had great pitching and defense. Niko (Mailloux) and Jared (Martin) really delivered. We also did a good job with our situational hitting, which is something we stress. We put runs together a few at the time. When you do that, the run total adds up and you emerge with a win.”
Continue reading "BCA sweeps quarterfinal opponent"

At Apalachee High School spring football practice, the usual people you expect to see are there. Wildcat coaches, players, trainers and personnel are there like they always are each spring practice.

However, there have also been several visitors to recent spring practice sessions in the form of college scouts who have their eye on numerous AHS players.

“It’s been a busy time,” Wildcat head coach Shane Davis said. “Of course, that’s good. It’s good for our kids to get this attention. I know for the past week and a half Coach (Matt) Sorrells has had to handle the weight room by himself because I’ve been busy talking with recruiters.”
Continue reading "Wildcats receiving plenty of spring attention"

A trio of Winder-Barrow High School track athletes went out in style last Thursday in Jefferson.

Jamonte Riden, Kendall Isler and Quintin Long each earned top 10 finishes in their respective events and helped cap a successful spring for Bulldogg track.

Riden was ninth in the long jump but just made it to the event on time in order to compete. Riden arrived just as the event was starting (he and his teammates got lost trying to get into the stadium) and was moved into the second heat.

Riden then jumped 21-10 to advance to the finals before finishing ninth. The personal best for Riden is 23-5 and that mark would have almost won state as Cedar Shoals’ Jamorio Calhoun took the event with a jump of 23-5.25.

“Competing at state is very different,” Riden said. “I know my stomach has been churning all day. I do my best not to get nervous but this is a big event. It’s something to compete in front of this many people. It’s tough to block it all out.”
Continue reading "WBHS trio makes impact in Jefferson"

The Banks County High School Leopards football team got a taste of the grass Friday night as they put on a show for the annual spring scrimmage game. The team was divided into four sections and took the field.

The main players were on a blue or white offense and defense with the younger players making up a black defense or offensive team.

The whole team took the field for warm up time and completed drills in agility and speed. The clock was set for two 40-minute halves and the squads went to work.
The blue offense scored one touchdown early in the first half. Coach Phillip Jones rotated quarterbacks and squads throughout the half.

Quarterback Will Ledford sustained a hand injury and Tyler Hubbard took a hit to the left shoulder and they sat out in the second half of the game.

The game was shorten because of injuries and many players got in and played positions. Jake Schaefer and Daniel Jarrell impressed the coaches during the game.

The coaching staff encouraged the players to concentrate on their academics for the remaining school year and summer workouts would start on May 30 in the weight room.
