The Commerce diamond Tigers hope the first five games of the season are not indicative of the rest of the baseball season.

Five games into the 2010 baseball season Commerce is still scratching for a win as Jefferson blanked the team on Saturday, 4-0 on the back of a two-run loss to Franklin last Wednesday, 13-11.

“Jefferson is a good team, but I think if we will start playing like we are capable we can be a good team,” said Tiger head coach Steve Cotrell. “Right now, the goal is to find a way to win one and see what happens.”

Monday, the Tigers hosted Lumpkin County for the team’s fifth loss, 14-2.
Continue reading "Tigers Still Searching For First Win"

The first few weeks of the season has had its ups and downs for the Jackson County Lady Panthers tennis teams.

Last week, despite losing to Stephens, Jackson County’s number three player, Rachel Glenfield, recorded her first set win in JCCHS tennis history.

This week, the Lady Panthers followed with a strong showing against the Lady Eagles of East Jackson, winning 3-2 with set wins recorded by number two player Erin Gentry and by number three player Rachel Glenfield.

Up next for the Lady Panthers was a home stand on Thursday against Archer.
If the pre-entry list is any indication, Saturday’s Champion Racing Association (CRA) Super Series Super Late Model event is going to produce plenty of thrills for fans attending the season-opening race at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson this Saturday.

A total of 27 Super Late Model teams and drivers have already entered the 125-lap event with several others expected to be on hand with the 2010 season takes the green flag this Saturday.

A longtime staple of the Gresham facility when it was known as Jefco, Georgia International and Peach State Speedways, Saturday’s race will mark the first time the Super Late Models have competed at GMP since 2008.
Continue reading "Gresham season opener set for Saturday"

It was a split week for the Banks County diamond Leopards as the baseball team avenged an earlier loss over Elbert, but fell behind to West Hall. Banks’ record is now 4-2 with only region games remaining scheduled for the season.
Depending on the weather, the Leopards are set to head to East Jackson on Friday. The region game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
East Jackson will be looking to upset an undefeated Banks County winning streak between the teams. Jefferson defeats Westminster, Callaway

For the first time in 27 years, the Jefferson Dragons boys’ basketball team is heading for the final four in Macon.

They got there by winning very close games against Westminster and Callaway that easily could have gone against them. But the Dragons fought back both times to put themselves in a position to contend for the state title.
Continue reading "Dragons head for the Final Four"

After nine years and 110 victories, Jackson County girls head basketball coach Chad Pittman has decided it’s time to move away from the JCCHS basketball program.

Pittman resigned as coach the morning of February 22, but waited until this week’s basketball banquet to make the official announcement.

“I just feel like currently, with things going on with my family, it’s kind of a good time to make a change,” Pittman said.
Continue reading "Pittman resigns as Lady Panthers coach"

eason opening wins, the East Jackson Eagles hoped to carry momentum into their next two games.

It didn’t work out that way, however, as the Eagles fell to both Osborne and Jackson County Saturday, leaving them 2-2 overall as the season enters its third week.

Banks enters play this week with a 4-2 record, still stinging from an 11-1 loss to West Hall this past Friday.
A region championship, a historic win over Jefferson, a 23-8 season and an elite eight finish — not bad for the Commerce boys’ basketball team this season.

The boys’ fairy tale season ended last Saturday against Whitefield Academy. Commerce advanced into the quarterfinal round of the Class A state playoffs, but was halted 86-38 by the Wolfpack.

“We did not finish the way we wanted but I am very proud of what this team was able to accomplish. Our final record was 23-8, region champs and finish in the Elite 8,” said coach Chad Bridges, adding that the team will look back on this season with some good memories.
Continue reading "Tiger Season Ends At 23-8"

Yes, it still very early in the 2010 baseball season for Winder-Barrow High School.

Heck, it hasn’t even really warmed up yet. Friday night as the Diamond Doggs were crushing North Oconee on the baseball field, spectators, including yours truly, were gathered around heaters trying to stay warm.
Continue reading "COLUMN: Diamond Doggs show makings of truly magical spring"

As Mike Cavey continues to build the Apalachee High School baseball program, he knows wins are important for a number of reasons.

First and foremost is confidence and with three consecutive victories, the Diamond Wildcats may have accomplished something for the first time in program history.

“I’m not sure we’ve ever won three in a row,” Cavey said earlier this week. “Getting wins means confidence and that’s what our program needs.”
Continue reading "Wildcats hope to benefit from early wins"

Coach Brian Smith’s Winder-Barrow High School Diamond Doggs completed their non-region schedule playing about as well as possible.

The veteran baseball coach knows, however, that Region 8-AAAA can make a team who is having success suddenly find itself scrambling.

“As happy as we are at how we have started, we want to peak and finish as hot as we can be going into the playoffs,” Smith said Monday. “We want to be playing together as a team as the season progresses.”
Continue reading "WBHS remains perfect this spring"

There are a couple of new teams waiting to face the Black and Gold gridiron Tigers in the 2010 season, but none have coach Steve Savage particularly worried.

With Jefferson firmly seated as the season opener, Aug. 27, the next round of the River War is locked in, but the rest of the schedule has seen some changes.

Commerce will face opponents the Tigers have not seen in a several years as well as a couple of newcomers to the region.
Continue reading "2010 Tiger Football Schedule Set"

A victory Friday night in Dalton over Callaway means the Jefferson Dragons will be heading to the basketball Final Four playoffs for the first time since 1983.

The Dragons rallied in the fourth quarter to cut the lead held by Callaway, then move ahead to win 65-58.

Jefferson will move on to play in Macon on Thursday against the winner of the Thomasville and Henry County pairing.
Continue reading "Dragons advance to the Final Four"

It wasn’t the start to the season that the Jefferson soccer teams were hoping for, as both the boys and the girls teams fell to Jackson County last week.

The boys lost 5-1 to the Panthers, while the girls came up on the short end of a 1-0 final.

Girls’ coach Shannon Dupree said their match with the Lady Panthers was a good one, but Jefferson ran into trouble when their goalkeeper had to leave the game due to a technical red card. Dupree said the player will be out for the next game as well.
Continue reading "Jefferson downed by Jackson County"

It was a cold start for the Banks County Leopards last week as the baseball team went 3-1 in the first four games of the season.

Despite the cold, coach Joe Lord said it was a good start for the team.

“We learned a good bit about our team,” Lord said. “We’re still trying to get some things figured out, but we definitely have a better idea of where we stand now than we did this time last week.”
Continue reading "Leopards start season 3-1 after four games"

Kevin Morris will be the first to tell you the 2009-2010 season in no way went the way he had hoped for his Apalachee High School Wildcats.

A definite learning and growing process, Morris is already looking ahead to next season when he hopes his Wildcats will be able to take steps forward.
Continue reading "Tough season now complete for AHS"

Far too often, a sports season is remembered by the final game.

It’s all part of the “What have you done for me lately?” mentality that too many sports fans display.
The East Jackson soccer teams got their seasons under way last week.

On Friday, both teams traveled to Oglethorpe County. The girls came away with a 2-1 victory. It was the second victory over Oglethorpe for the Lady Eagles, who had also won a scrimmage game over them on Feb. 19.

The boys, meanwhile, had a scoreless game through regular time and double overtime before falling 4-3 on penalty kicks.
Continue reading "Lady Eagles Defeat Patriots"

After leading for most of the game, the Jefferson Dragons worked hard in the final seconds to hold off a late charge by Westminster to pick up a 58-56 win Wednesday night, and advance into the Elite Eight in AA state playoffs.

After a tight first quarter, the Dragons took firm control of the game in the following 16 minutes. A late surge from Westminster, who scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to challenge. But in the end, Jefferson withstood the charge for the win.
Continue reading "Jefferson defeats Westminster, moves to Elite Eight"
