Leopards go 3-for-4 to improve to 11-12

Banks County’s baseball Leopards improved the season standings to 11-12 last week as the team went 3-for-4 on the diamond.

After the comeback win over East Jackson last Monday, 6-5, Banks County took their action on the road, defeating Oglethorpe Tuesday night. Facing the Patriots in Lexington, the Leopards pushed to eight innings to secure the win, 11-10.

After Oglethorpe tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, Banks County responded in the top of the eighth to claim the victory over the 8-AA South opponent. [Full Story »]

Banks County’s baseball team may be out of the playoffs but the season continues for the diamond Leopards in added games.

Monday, the Leopards defeated cross-region rival East Jackson. On Tuesday, the team was scheduled to head to Lexington to face Oglethorpe County. At press time, results from Tuesday’s game were unavailable.

This afternoon (Wednesday) Banks County is set to host East Hall and hold it’s senior night honors which were postponed. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. with senior night honors following the game. [Full Story »] 

C. Gowder headed to state; shoots 76 at region

Banks County’s lady golfers completed their region golf round last week at Scales Creek/Hammers Glen golf course.

With a team score of 182, the Banks County Lady Leopards finished third in the region tourney, led by Cara Gowder, tournament low medalist, shooting a 76. Laura Rose Pickens completed the scoring shooting 106.

Kaytlyn Poole shot a 111 and Lindsey McDuffie shot a 123, both of their scores were not tallied as part of the team totals.

Gowder’s low score qualified her for a return trip to the state tournament ahead May 2 at Long Shadow golf course in Madison.

Westminster ends BC netters’ playoff run

The Banks County netters put up a strong showing, but ended their state playoff trip sooner than hoped.

In the luck of the draw, the Leopards and Lady Leopards both faced Westminster last Wednesday in the first round of the playoffs. The Wildcats defeated both teams, 5-0.

For the Lady Leopards, coach Lisa Thomas said that she is very proud of the team and their love for the game. [Full Story »] 

Diamond Leopards to end season with added games

Banks County’s baseball season is drawing to a close as the boys were scheduled to play Union County last Friday and finish out the regular season on Monday against Westside at Commerce.

After losing to Fannin County, 8-5, last Wednesday, the diamond Leopards prepared to host Union County, April 15.

With storms blowing in, the team attempted to get in the game against the number two team in the 8-AA North sub-region. The game proceeded through four innings with Union County pulling to a 5-3 lead before play was suspended due to lighting alerts.

The game was rescheduled to Tuesday along with the postponed Senior Night honors.

Netters face Westminster at state

Banks County’s netters are advancing into the first round of the state playoffs.

The teams took on Westminster Christian Academy, Wednesday. See next week's Banks' County news for results.

While the trip to the playoffs was secured as the boys and girls won the sub-region championships, the region tournament decided the seeding for Banks County at the playoffs. The Lady Leopards earned the third seed in Region 8-AA, defeating Jefferson in the consolation round final.

Banks County’s girls fell to Hart County in the semi finals last week. Hart County went on to take the second seed, behind North Oconee the region champions.

Cleveland named boys’ basketball coach

Banks County announced the hiring of Mike Cleveland as the varsity boys’ basketball coach.

Cleveland will take over for coach Mike Ruth, who announced his retirement last month.

Coming from Hart County, Cleveland’s most recent season in the south side of 8-AA resulted in a 20-9, 12-2 record, the number three seed in the region and reaching the first round of the playoffs.

The players are scheduled to meet the new coach on Friday at the high school, according to school officials.

Golfers look to final rounds

In a recent round, the Banks County’s boys’ golf team earned third in a four-way on the links.

Banks County shot a combined 213 while Lincoln County took the win with a final score of 180. Washington Wilkes earned second shooting 201 and Green County shot 226 for fourth.

This afternoon (Wednesday) the Banks County golfers were back at Samples Scales/Hammers Glen hosting Washington Wilkes and Madison County.

On Thursday, the teams will take on Jackson County at Traditions golf course. The Thursday round will be a good play through for the teams as they prepare for the region tournament set for April 18, also at Traditions.

Leopards drop four games

On the diamond, the Banks County baseball team is preparing for the final three games of the regular season.

Diamond Leopards take on Fannin County today (Wednesday) at home at 5:30 p.m., before Friday’s final regular season home game against Union County. Opening pitch on Friday is at 5:30 p.m. Friday is also Senior Night for the Banks County Leopards.

The Leopards end the regular season Monday, April 18, against Westside.

After defeating East Hall 11-1 last Tuesday, the boys entered a three game rut losing to Dawson County 10-1; Fannin County 13-3 and Rabun County 0-3.
Banks County played Commerce Tuesday night and were blown-out 14-0.

Netters set for region

Banks County netters are set to start the region tournament tomorrow, Thursday, at North Oconee. Both Banks County teams put in a week of final practice for preparation for the tournament.

Both teams take a first round bye as the sub-region champions in the region tourney. The region tournament will determine seeding into the state tournament as both the Leopards and Lady Leopards look to push deep into the playoffs.

A rain date has also been posted if the region tournament is forced to be postponed, the games will be completed on Saturday, April 16.

The region tournament begins at 9 a.m. Thursday, with the number three seed and the number two seed matches. Banks County’s teams play the winner.
