The biggest problem facing the Banks County Leopards on the court right now is turnovers, but it’s a problem coach Mike Ruth has already seen the team begin to solve.

Banks County was killed last Tuesday in the Habersham County game with 33 turnovers. Ruth said that Habersham capitalized on 21 of those turnovers to score.

“Our kids are hustling and it is just the little things we have to work on,” said Ruth. “It is going to take some time to feel out and build consistency on those things. I’m trying to let them play through since it’s still early in the season.”

While Ruth wants to see the boys work past mistakes during the games, he isn’t going to just continue to allow the same ones over and over. [Full Story »] 

Banks County’s mat Leopards have been busy since the start of the month, earning a second-place finish at the Patriot Classic and getting two placers at the Panther Invitational last weekend.

With some early successes, the Leopards look to continue to grow as the boys prepare to compete in the Morgan County Choo-Cho Classic this weekend, followed by a tri-match with East Jackson and Gainesville next Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Nicholson.

This past weekend at the Panther Invitational, Banks County brought home 14th overall from the 26 teams. The mat Leopards had a fourth and fifth place individual finisher. In the 130 class, Justin “Fish” Fincannon fell to Locust Grove’s grappler for fourth place. [Full Story »] 

The opening streak for the BCHS Lady Leopards was short-lived as Banks County hosted Habersham Central Tuesday night.

The 62-34 defeat started off with Habersham scoring nine unanswered points.

According to coach Jerry King, Banks County’s biggest problem was defending against the inside girl.

“We had trouble shooting and blocking their inside position,” he said. “It was a long night.” [Full Story »] 

Friday night just wasn’t meant to be for the Leopards, as Hart County took a 34-13 win.

Banks County opened with a drive to the Bulldog 30-yard line, but couldn’t get into the end zone.

The Leopards had 11 possessions, but were only able to turn two of those into scoring opportunities. Banks County started cutting into the deficit in the second half after Hart County pulled ahead in the first half.

The cross-country season ended a little sooner than hoped for the Banks County runners.

While a trip to Carrollton is not in the future for the Leopard runners, this season was still very productive for both teams as the boys and girls both set fast times around a new home course layout.

Last week at the region championships, the Lady Leopards placed 10th overall. Leading the team were Maggie McCoy (24:42), Kara Murphy (26:23) and Bridget Marlow (27:57). Following close within a two minute block were Marissa Lewis (29:45), Rachel Guthrie (30:42), Janet Preza (31:12) and Karli Perry (31:13). [Full Story »] 

Last Friday night was one for the history books as Banks County recorded its first win over East Hall. The Leopards won 53-28 over the Vikings in a big sub-region victory which opens the door for Banks County to earn the fourth seed in 8-AA.

With only one loss in sub-region play, Banks County (4-1,7-2) battles this week for the fourth seed and a possible long-shot at the third seed. This Friday night, the Leopards head to Hart County (4-2,5-3-1) to take on the Bulldogs. A Banks County victory sends the boys onto the postseason, but in what position is determined by a different region play.

North Oconee takes on Dawson County. If Dawson pulls off the upset, Banks County will head to the playoffs as the number three seed, if Banks County wins, and Dawson loses, the Leopards are the number four seed. Dawson County has already pulled one surprise victory this season over Fannin County. The Tigers are outmatched on paper against the Titans, but it’s not over until the end of the fourth quarter Friday night. [Full Story »]
