Banks County’s Lady Leopards improved to 7-8 last week with a 57-45 win over the East Jackson Lady Eagles.

While slated to begin the brunt of region play this week, the snow and winter weather that blanketed the county forced the postponement of the Rabun County game on Tuesday and could mean that the Friday and Saturday games against East Hall and Oglethorpe would be rescheduled as well.

Coach Jerry King said, “Our games at East Hall and at home against Oglethorpe will be played if we are back in school.”

The Banks County mat Leopards earned a trip to Macon for the third year in a row, qualifying for the State Duals Tournament, this past weekend with a second place place finish at the Area Duals in Jefferson.

Northeast Georgia wrestling powerhouse Jefferson, took first at the Area Duals, while region newcomer Jackson County battled Banks County for the qualifying position, taking third. [Full Story »] 

The 2010 all sub-region teams have been finalized as the six teams from the north side of 8-AA selected several Banks County players to the teams.

Banks County’s gridiron Leopards finished the season 4-1; 7-3 this past football season and was the runner-up in the north sub-region, with the only region loss to Fannin County the sub-region champion.

Four senior Leopards earned spots onto the all sub-region first team. [Full Story »] 

The new year is off to a great start as the Banks County mat Leopards kicked off 2011 with a tournament win at the Georgia-Carolina Classic, Jan. 1.

Banks County returned as the champion of the 17th annual Georgia-Carolina Classic, hosted by Hart County, after defeating area opponent Jackson County in the final round. Last year the Jackson County Panthers defeated the mat Leopards in the final, and were favored this year as the champion.

Jackson County was a fourth ranked team in the state while Banks County was ranked at sixth heading into the final match. Banks County secured the win 39-30, but a last match forfeit by the Panthers finalized the win 45-30 for the mat Leopards. [Full Story »] 

As the end of the year approaches, a look back is in order to highlight the top five sport stories of the year in Banks County High School athletics.

Between changes of coaches to accomplishing winning records and individual performances, 2010 had many ups and downs for the student athletes in Bank County.

The Lady Leopards hit a rough patch right before Christmas as several players were benched due to injuries. Coach Jerry King was hoping to use the Christmas tournament at Piedmont College last weekend and the upcoming Wingslingers’ Shootout at East Jackson to find depth on the bench.

Unfortunately for Banks County, neither games from the Piedmont College fourth annual Holiday Classic went in the Lady Leopards’ favor.

“Friday we played flat and Saturday we stayed in foul trouble,” King said.

The Lady Leopards opened with a two point advantage, 9-7, over the White County Warriors. During the second period, White County surged ahead to take the lead. Banks County responded and managed to tie the game at 13-13 before the halftime break. [Full Story »] 

The Banks County boys were undone over the weekend after playing one of the best halves in two seasons against Stephens County the previous Tuesday.

According to coach Mike Ruth, the Banks County boys played the best first half of a game that he has seen in two years during the Dec. 14 match-up with Stephens County. Both teams were close in the first quarter, Banks County held a small advantage, 14-13.

During the second quarter, the Leopards got aggressive and tilted the table for a 17-8 quarter, to lead at the break 31-21. The 10 point stretch would prove to be what was needed to hold out for the win in the 61-50 contest. The win over the Indians is the eighth win for the Leopards. [Full Story »] 

The Lady Leopards’ season started off as one of the best in coach Jerry Kings’ record, but setbacks due to injuries has complicated things and now the Banks County bench is looking rather shallow.

The girls moved to 4-2 after picking up a 56-16 win over Oglethorpe, Dec. 7. However the loss of several players due to injuries across the Friday sub-region game with Fannin County and the Saturday rematch with Jackson County, leaves the Lady Leopards 4-4 with two holiday tournaments still ahead.

Coming up the girls are playing in the Piedmont College Holiday Classic this weekend. After the Christmas break, the Lady Leopards return to play in the Dec. 28-30 Wingslingers’ tourney hosted by East Jackson. [Full Story »]
